Grant Victor Ashby
Grant Victor Ashby moved from this life to the next on May 6, 2014. He was born Nov 23, 1926, the 6th of 10 children to William Earl and Norien Jarvis Ashby.
Known to his family as Grant but to his friends as Vic, he grew up in the Liberty Park area of SLC. He loved sports of all kinds and could always be found in a pick-up game. As he grew he played on several teams at West High School.
was winding down he enlisted in the Navy but did not see active combat duty. It was during his time in the Navy that he developed a testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a desire to serve as a missionary. He was called to serve in the LDS Western Canada Mission where he served faithfully as the District President. His love of the gospel was very evident the remainder of his life.
He attended BYU where he graduated in Physical Education, but more importantly met and married his wife of 63 years, Iris Austin in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they created a loving family of 6 children.
Vic became a beloved school teacher
and coach, where he was equally gifted at teaching math and dribbling with the left hand. The highlight at the end of any school year was the giant peanut war he hosted in his classroom. His love of teaching was only matched by his love of Dr. Seuss.
To supplement his teacher's salary, Vic and Iris owned and operated a successful window coverings business in Orem. Iris was the seamstress and Vic was the installer. Their quality product created more demand than they could ever produce.
Vic had an artistic side as well, which included: published author, poet, and illustrator.
In retirement Vic and Iris lived in the St. George area where they have many wonderful friends.
He is survived by his wife, Iris. Siblings: Lenett Cash and Wayne Ashby. Children: Ginger (Mark) Weibell, Cary (Luanne) Ashby, Ben (Melanie) Ashby, Ned (Marilyn) Ashby, Crystal Ashby, Darin (Alisa) Ashby along with 32 grandchildren, and 58 great-grandchildren. Proceeded in death by his parents and 7 siblings. Special thanks to Kolob Care Center of St. George.
