Hal Norton(2013 - 2013)

Harold (Hal) Arnold Norton

St. George

We celebrated a wonderful 84th birthday on May 12, 2013, for our husband, father and grandfather, Harold (Hal) Arnold Norton. He left us quietly on May 16, 2013, while tending to his yard. He leaves us with a lifetime of great memories for which we will always be grateful. Hal was born in Franklin, Nebraska, to Alfred Alfonso and Esther Elizabeth Jacobs Norton. He graduated from Springville High School where he was an outstanding athlete. He lettered in baseball, basketball, football and track. Hal was recruited by BYU on a football scholarship and also participated in track. After enrolling at BYU he was drafted and served in the Korean War. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to BYU and his love of athletics. Hal went on to earn all-conference honors and set records in field events. On June 26, 1954, he married Uldene Adams in Cedar City, Utah. The marriage was later solemnized on March 24, 1962 in the St. George LDS Temple. The Norton's were blessed with four children.

After graduating from BYU, Hal taught at Cedar High and coached football, wrestling and track from 1956-1965. He then returned to BYU to complete his Master's Degree in 1966. Post graduation, Hal was hired as the Athletic Director at Dixie College where he also was an Assistant football coach and trainer. Hal spent 20 years at Dixie College before retiring in 1987.

While in St. George, Hal served the community for 30 years in the Lion's Club where he spent time as President, Rodeo Chairman and many years on the race committee. Hal was also a charter member of St. George's "real" city council at Dick's Café. Hal loved spending time at his cabin in Crystal.

Hal is survived by his wife, Uldene, three children, Kevin (Lisa), Kristan, Natalie Larsen (Milton). He has 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Hal was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister, son, grandson and a great granddaughter.
