Ralph Joseph Oram

Cedar City, Utah

Ralph J. Oram passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at his home at Emerald Pointe in Cedar City, Utah. Ralph was born on January 24, 1919 in Boulder, Colorado, one of ten children to Robert Radford Oram and Josephine Katherine Stengel.

He grew up on a farm and at the age of 15 moved to southern California where he worked at various jobs until he enlisted in the Navy in 1942. Ralph was a Machine Mate First Class and served on the USS Beaver in the Pacific. While in the Navy he met and married his first wife, Ruth Thornley, and they had two children. She passed away in 1973. The next year he married Veda Schiller, and they had one son. They later divorced. In 1987 he married Marie Plagmann.

After leaving the Navy and over the course of his life he worked primarily in bread delivery and sales in Los Angeles and Sacramento, California. After retiring in 1985, he moved to Bend, Oregon, where he lived until 2009. At that time, he moved to Cedar City, Utah, and resided at Emerald Pointe Assisted Living Center in the Memory Care Neighborhood, where he made many friends and brightened many people's lives with his sense of humor and warm smile.

Ralph enjoyed being outdoors, yard work of any kind, remodeling homes and building things. His greatest joy in life came from being with and sharing good laughs with his family. At a later stage in his life he learned to dance and it was an activity that he would do often. He also had a passion for all kinds of music. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for many years, and was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Marie, of Bend, OR; daughter, Shirley (Carl) Templin, Cedar City, UT; sons, Al (Connie) Oram, Canyon Country, CA, and Joe (Chelsea) Oram, Alfalfa, OR; sister, Margie Craig, Westminster, CO; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Along with his first wife, Ruth, he is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and five brothers.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 18 from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. prior to funeral services at 10:00 a.m. the same day at Southern Utah Mortuary. Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 9:00 am in El Toro Memorial Park in Lake Forest, California under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to his wonderful family at Emerald Pointe whom he loved and who cared for him so lovingly, and also to Alliance Hospice Care for their compassion in his final days not only to him but also his family.
