Alma Spendlove

1925 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Alma Spendlove Obituary
Alma Spendlove

St. George

Alma Spendlove, age 87, died Tuesday, November 13, 2012 of a Jazz overdose. After 3 overtimes, a Jazz win and a Bloomin' Onion, she was 'good to go'. She was born in St. George, Utah on May 18, 1925, the fifth child of nine to Victor and Clio McArthur Sullivan.

She attended Dixie High School and played tenor saxophone in High School, College and Dance bands.

Alma met Elwood at a dance and he followed up the next night at "The White Way" malt shop that she owned and operated as a 'soda jerk' (as she called herself). She sold "The White Way" and went to Quish Beauty School in Salt Lake and practiced hairdressing until she married.

She married Elwood Whitney Spendlove on Sept 27, 1946 in St. George and later sealed in the St. George Temple on February 6, 1954.

She had many hobbies. She loved square dancing, fishing, playing cards, roller skating, fishing, Matchgame '74, jigsaw puzzles, the CryptoQuote in the newspaper, fishing, jump rope, bike riding, water skiing, fishing, golfing, quilting, Jazz games, grandkids ballgames, a great cook including baking, and oh, did we mention, fishing.

She worked with her sister at the "Garden of Edith" flower shop to make corsages when there were high school, and college dances.

She served in numerous Church callings and served a mission in the Washington, Seattle Mission with Elwood. They kept up with all the friends they made there. She served as an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple for several years previous to their mission.

After she lost her eyesight from macular degeneration, she got a reader and still was able to read the funnies and obituaries and do the CryptoQuote every day. She listened to books on tape, played solitaire on the computer and got many stories by osmosis while she dozed.

She thought Sunday was complete when all of her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids would come over in the evening.

She is survived by her children, Linda (Gert) Fristrup, Stuart (Terrie) Spendlove, Louise (Bill) Seger, Marie (Doyle) Smith, Sandra (David) Peterson; her sisters Mary, Cleo and Lela; 17 grandchildren and 38 and counting great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elwood; siblings, Robert, Ralph, V.J., Edith and Deloris.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 19, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the LDS Chapel on 912 South 1740 East, St. George, UT. Visitations will be Sunday, November 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, UT and on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services in the Chapel.
