Mrs. Juanita Derr Burns, age 94, of the Cardwell community of Washington County, passed away at 1:28 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013 at her home.
A native of Washington County, she was born on Oct. 17, 1919 to the late Moland and Annie Sims Derr. She was a member of the Mt. Freedom Baptist Church, a 1938 graduate of Willisburg High School, a homemaker and was the former owner and operator along with her husband in the Randall Burns Grocery of Cardwell for 50 years. On June 7, 1941 she was united in marriage to, Randall J. Burns who preceded her in death on March 13, 2011. Also preceding her in death were five sisters, Vivian Thompson, Grace Devine, Nellie Harlow, Louise Perkins and Hallie Newton; three brothers, Cecil Derr, Robert Derr and Fred Derr.
Survivors include her two sons, Jerry Burns, and his wife, Peggy of Harrodsburg and Randy Burns and his wife, Cathy of Springfield; four grandchildren, Brian Burns and his wife, Sheila of Harrodsburg, Susan Holt and her husband, Adam of Lexington, Jonathan Burns of Lexington and Matthew Burns and his wife, Sarah of Lexington and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 5 at the Carey & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Jamie Chesser, pastor of the Mt. Freedom Baptist Church, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. John McDaniel, a former pastor.
Burial was in the Mt. Freedom Cemetery.
Serving, as pallbearers were Joe Harlow, Bobby Thompson, Adr-ian Thompson, Rodney Thompson, Eugene Bis-hop and Gary Jenkins.
