Richard Thomas Smith

Richard Thomas "Rick" Smith, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013.
A native of Springfield, he was born on March 22, 1963. Rick was a 1981 graduate of Washington County High School and received his Associates Degree in Radiologic Technology from Lexington Community College. He was also a graduate of the U.S. Army Aviation Center in Ft. Rucker, Ala. Rick was employed as a helicopter pilot at ATS/Bizzack in Lexington. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish and served on their bereavement committee. He was also a member of the St. Joseph Elementary School Board and the Knights of Columbus. Rick was a man of many talents and was always outgoing, friendly and full of life and shared those talents and gifts freely with others. He loved his family; his friends and he loved to fly.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-three years, Molly Keene Smith and his four children, Rebekah (Nashville, Tenn.), Zachary, Jon-athan, and Phillip, all at home. He is also survived by his father, John Francis Smith of Lexington, his mother, Mattie Sue Schafer of Springfield, his sister, Polly (Steve) Gaines of Erlanger, his brother, Dr. J. Michael Smith (Lou Ann) of Louisville, and several in-laws and nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him dearly. Visitation was held at Hale Polin Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery in Springfield.
Pallbearers will be Justin Smith, Alex Smith, Kyle Curley, Curt Curley, Thomas Keene, John Robert Shumway, Peter Boone and Kalen Boone.
Donations in Rick's memory may be made to Bethlehem High School or St. Joseph Elementary School, both in Bardstown.
