Dominican Sister of Peace Ann Bell, OP, 90, a native of Springfield, died on July 24, 2017, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky. Three sisters Jane and Pat Bell, and Margaret Riney of Louisville, as well as several nieces and nephews survive Sr. Ann.
A Dominican for 69 years, Sr. Ann earned a bachelor of science in home economics/science from Spalding College (Louisville) and a master of education in home economics from St. Louis University (St. Louis, Missouri). Sister also received a certificate of theological studies from Catholic Theological Union (Chicago, Illinois). She ministered as a teacher at St. James (McMechen, West Virginia) and St. John (Lima, Ohio). Sr. Ann served as superior/principal at St. Stephen Martyr (Louisville). She was the regional superior of the southern region from 1966-1971. She later became the director of the school food service for the Archdiocese of Catholic Schools in Louisville. In 1976, Sr. Ann became the motherhouse coordinator and director of programs at St. Catharine Motherhouse, St. Catharine. Sister took on a new role as registrar and director of admissions at St. Catharine College, in 1979. Later, in 1983 she became the assistant vice-president of academic affairs at Pikeville College in Pikeville, Kentucky. In 1986, Sr. Ann was the registrar for graduate programs at Spalding University, Louisville. In 1988, Sr. Ann was elected to serve as a governing board member. Following her term in office, Sister worked as the assistant to the director of project AIMM in Louisville. In 1995, Sr. Ann was office assistant at Holy Spirit School. In 2001, she volunteered at St. Pius Parish in Louisville and later retired to a ministry of prayer.
In 2006, Sr. Ann moved to Sansbury Care Center where she continued her ministry of prayer and presence.
The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 28, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial was in the St. Catharine Motherhouse Cemetery.
