Bernice Ann (McMurtry) Best, age 74, of Independence, Ky. passed away at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012.
A native of Washington County, she was born Feb. 6, 1938 to Loraine McMurtry, and the late Delbert R. McMurtry. She was married to Alton G. Best of Independence, Ky.
She was a graduate of Northern Kentucky University and taught kindergarten for 17 years. She had a new math instructional concept published in the McGraw-Hill K-8 Mathematics Activity Book and was given a certificate of 'Outstanding Contribution to KY Children and Devotion to Education' in 1990. She was also awarded 'Outstanding Student in Elementary Education' from NKU. She was a member of Walton United Methodist Church and initiated the United Methodist Women's group in 1957.
She is survived by a son, James and daughter-in-law, Ray Anne Best; daughter Dr. Gay Ann and husband, John Lafferty; and grandsons, Scott and Jared Best. She is also survived by her husband and mother.
