Joe Edison Hays, age 78, of the Mt. Zion Community of Washington County, passed away at 8 a.m., Monday, April 22, 2013 at his home.
A native of Washington County, he was born on May 24, 1934 to the late Joseph Edison Sr. and Anna Christine Dodson Hays.
He was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, a 1952 graduate of Springfield High School and an Army veteran.
Preceding him in death was his sister, Ollie Lee Kelly on July 1, 1974.
Survivors include his brother-in-law, Col. (Ret) Arthur L Kelly of Frankfort; two nephews, Dan Kelly and his wife, Darlene of Springfield and Steve Kelly of Charlotte, N.C.; three nieces, Sue Ballard and her husband, Jimmy of Elizabethtown, Debbie Hissam and her husband, Andy of Madison, Alabama and Krista Weatherly of Tuscon, Arizona; 11 great-nieces and nephews and 15 great-great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 25 at Carey & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Earl Hazel, officiating. Conducting the graveside service was Rev. John Loper, pastor of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Bloomfield.
Serving as pallbearers were Louis Kelly, Jimmy Ballard, Jimmie Grigsby, Jimmy Bodine, David Bodine and Keith Nally.
Carey & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
