John Bernard "Johnny" Essex, 80, of Pleasant Drive, Springfield, passed away at 5:13 a.m., Sunday, June 24, 2018, at the Norton Women's and Children's Hospital in Louisville.
A native of Marion County, he was born on Dec.12, 1937, to the late James Wilson and Beatrice Downs Essex.
He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and a retired employee of Ford Motor Company.
Preceding him in death was a sister, Agnes Geraldine Crick and four brothers, Charles Edward, Joseph Gerald, James Robert and Francis Leo Essex.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Goatley Essex; a daughter, Lisa Ann Brady (Randy) of Springfield and two sons, John Michael Essex of Springfield and William Hamilton Essex (Laura) of Loretto; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Leon Essex (Lois) of Springfield and Thomas Damian Essex (Flo) of Louisville; a special niece, Susie Kelly (David) of Springfield; a sister-in-law, Becky Jane Essex of Loretto and a brother-in-law, Buddy Goatley of Springfield.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 27, at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Edmund Ditton, officiating.
Burial was in St. Dominic-Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were Michael Barnett, Joe Fenwick, Gerrit Thomas, J.J. Essex, Cody Essex, Peyton Essex, Matthew Essex, Jane Hilton and Austin Kelly.
Casket bearers were Scott Essex, Daryl Essex, David Essex, David Kelly, Randy Sallee and Stevie Kelly.
A prayer service was held 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at Carey & Son funeral home.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to: St. Dominic Capital Campaign in memory of John Essex.
