Leo Julian Carden Jr. of South Boston, Va. died Wednesday, April 24, 2013. He was born in Durham, N.C. on Aug. 18, 1926 and was 86 years of age. He was the son of the late Leo J. Carden Sr. and Mabel Stubbins Carden.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wanda 'Bet' Christerson Carden; a son-in-law, Lisa and David Peckens, Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Helen C. Hayes of Nelson, Va. and Lake Mary, Fla.; and several devoted nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Mabel C. Puryear, Elizabeth C. Traynham and Nannie C. Frederick.
He was a long time member of Main Street Methodist Church. He was a graduate of C.H. Friend High School, served in the U.S. Army for two years with WW II, and attended Randolph Macon College. He retired after 43 years in the tobacco business. He was associated with Imperial Tobacco Company, South Boston for 31 years and with Jas. I. Miller Tobacco Company and Standard Commercial Tobacco Company of Wilson, N.C. for 12 years. He had assignments in the Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia and Burley Belts. He enjoyed his work and was well liked by his many friends and colleagues. His sense of humor and joke telling were legendary.
Before and after retirement, he enjoyed golf, travel, the YMCA, following the Duke basketball team and coaching his many youth league basketball teams. In 2009 he was honored to be inducted into the South Boston-Halifax Sports Hall of Fame for 25 years of coaching the Hawks team with the late Hugh Moore. He was a regular blood donor and gave over 100 pints before he was restricted from giving on account of having to have a pacemaker.
A funeral service was held Saturday, Apr. 27, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed Rigg officiating. Burial followed at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
