Robert Logan "Bob" Purdom, 81, of the Texas, Ky., died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, at 9:36 p.m. at Norton Healthcare Pavilion, Hosparus Center in Louisville, after a long illness.
A native of Washington County, he was born on Jan. 4, 1933, to the late Lucien H. and Irene Peterson Purdom.
Bob, a steadfast and loving family man, is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Grubbs Purdom, whom he married on Sept. 10, 1955. Three sons and their wives, Joey and Karen Purdom and Warren and Tammi Purdom, also of Texas, and Scott and Sharon Purdom, of Shelbyville, also survive him.
He was well-loved by his seven grandchildren, Casey, Zachary, Quincy, Warren Thomas, Kevin, Matthew and Courtney Purdom and four great grandchildren, MaKenzie Purdom, Madison Wright and Sophia and Wyatt Purdom. He will be greatly missed by his surviving sister, Helen Purdom, also of Texas.
In addition to his parents, two brothers, Billy Joe Purdom on Oct. 9, 1980 and Tom Purdom on Dec. 31, 1998, predeceased him.
Bob graduated from Springfield High School in 1951. He then served his country by enlisting in the Army in 1952 at the onset of the Korean War and was stationed in Japan. He was a patriotic man, proud over the years to serve his community, Kentucky and his country. Following his military service, he attended Eastern Kentucky University, graduating in 1958. Over his career, where he served under eight governors, Bob was appointed as Kentucky's State Local Finance Officer, overseeing the finances of the commonwealth's 120 counties. After his retirement in 1986, he followed his family's footsteps into the local tobacco industry, serving for 15 years as Secretary of the Washington County Co-Op Tobacco Warehouse.
He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, serving for many years as Cemetery Trustee, and served in various volunteer roles in the community, his keen mind providing practical guidance to many. He had an avid interest in Civil War history, horseracing and Native American artifacts.
Funeral services were held at Carey & Son Funeral Home at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, with Rev. Kyle Yankey, officiating. Burial was in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery near Texas, where the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard conducted military honors.

I am so sorry for your loss. Bobby was a classmate, friend and teammate on the 1950 SHS football team. Although we never met after graduation we communicated several years ago and discussed football, including his game-winning catch of a TD pass against St Joe Prep. He will be missed.

To the Purdom family. During this difficult time family, friends and even strangers want to express how much they care for your family by a note or a warm hug. Proverbs 17:17 says "A true companion is loving all the time, and is a brother that is born for when there is distress."
