Samie Burns, age 90, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of the Pottsville Community of Washington County, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013, in Port Charlotte.
A native of Washington County, he was born on Oct. 21, 1922, to the late George and Dora Milburn Burns.
Preceding him in death were his son, John Burns and his wife, Eleanora Womack Burns.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, a graduate of Centre College in Danville where he was a member of the alumni, a member of the Gideon's International, and a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Port Charlotte. He was a retired high school biology, English, and drivers' training teacher, high school principal and business owner.
Survivors include four daughters, Virginia Fick and her husband, William of Plainview, Va., Linda Riffe of Louisville, Mary Kent of Austin, Texas, and Anna Lois Sonderson and her husband, Gene of Stafford, Va.; two sons, Robert Michael Burns and his wife, Debbie of Port Charlotte, Fla. and Bryan Burns and his wife, Heather of Winterhaven, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 13 at the Bethlehem Cemetery in Springfield, where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.
