Merrill Blackerby, age 89, of Perryville Road, Springfield, passed away at 2:04 p.m., Friday, June 28, 2013 at the V.A. Medical Center in Louisville.
He was born in Nelson County on June 22, 1924 to the late John Thomas and Emma Royalty Blackerby.
He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and a self-employed contractor, having built many homes in Washington County. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and was captured during this time and was a P.O.W. for several months.
Preceding him in death were his first wife, Ora Ray Kays Blackerby; two sisters, Louise Blackerby and Catherine Rose Blackerby English; a half-sister, Hattie Walls Ernst; and two half-brothers, Ruel Walls and Sherman Walls.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Smith Blackerby; two sons, Michael Blackerby (John Spalding) of Louisville and Jim Blackerby (Carolyn) of Campbellsville; two grandchildren, Kim Blackerby and Kevin Blackerby.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 3 at Carey & Son Funeral Home with Rev. David Simpson, former pastor of Temple Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial was on Cemetery Hill where military rites were conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were John R. Hardin and Don Ernst. Casket bearers were Jerry Hardin, Bill Hardin, Donnie Hardin, Rick Hardin, Tommy Walls and Ronnie Rakes.
