Barbara Edelen Mackin passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 at the home of her daughter, Mary Ritchie in Louisville.
The Guest Book is expired.
Excepting her college years, she was a lifelong resident of Springfield, Ky., or "God's Country" as she referred to it in her many travels. She truly believed that the Springfield and Bardstown (her parent's hometown) area was the cradle of civilization. The wellspring for which all that is good and notable in society sprang.
She received a bachelor's degree in medical technology from Spalding College.
She was passionate about children and learning and started and funded a Heritage Tour for local elementary school children in Springfield and was a reading tutor. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, where she was honored with the Alumni of the Year Award in 2013. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
In addition to family and her hometown, she loved Keeneland, UK athletics, and especially her stories.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her grade school and high school sweetheart, and the love of her life, Tom Mackin; and by her beloved daughter, Sally Mackin.
She is survived by her "little chickens", Mike (Missy Hourigan) of Louisville, Anne Talley of Lexington, Barbie of Tokyo, Tom of Louisville, George of Los Angeles, Mary Ritchie (Payton) of Louisville, John (Stephanie) of Incline Village, Nev.; and grandchildren, Berkeley Riley (Danielle) of San Francisco and Rebecca Talley of Nashville. She is also survived by her adopted family, Mike and Susie McCain and their children; and special family friends, Michele Thomas, Connie McFarland, Nordie and Jonathan Votaw.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Dominic School or Hosparus of Louisville.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Springfield.
Celebration of life to follow.
