Randall BENNETT Obituary

BENNETT, Randall Stephen - Randy Bennett, 52, of Toronto, passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 3, 2013. He tragically left behind his wife Caroline, his daughter Shannon and her husband Alan, his step-children Emily and Matthew, his parents Addie and Peter, his sister Sheri and brothers, Joe, Pat, Rick and Glenn, as well as many close friends and associates. His daughter jokingly said, and Randy often and proudly repeated, that Randy didn't believe in God because he didn't think there was anyone greater than himself. However, Randy strongly believed in family and friends. He was not one for small talk, but was always ready to help someone in need with no problem too small. He told you exactly where you were going wrong, but never made you feel foolish. Once Randy took you on, you were his for life. He was loyal beyond measure to his friends and a devoted husband, father, step- father, father-in-law, son, son-in- law and brother. Randy was born in Placentia, Newfoundland. Randy had many chapters in his life, including running a horse farm, working for a lumber company and most recently, practicing law. Randy received an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1998. He clerked for the Chief Justice of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice from 1998-1999. Called to the Ontario Bar in 2000, Randy quickly became a well-respected lawyer in the areas of litigation and securities law: first with Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP as an associate and then as a founding partner of Rueter Scargall Bennett LLP in 2004. He was as dedicated to his clients as he was to his family and friends. A private visitation for family will take place at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W. (at Windermere, just east of the Jane subway), on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 1-3 p.m. A Celebration of Randy's Life will be held at Woodbine Racetrack, 555 Rexdale Blvd., on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 7-9 p.m. All are welcome. Donations in Randy's name can be made to the Law Society Foundation Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program at www. lawyersfeedthehungry.ca/toronto Online condolences may be made through www.turnerporter.ca

Randy was among the finest lawyers I have ever met. He was honest, straight-talking and down to earth. I knew that I could trust him, without question. I enjoyed working with him and also our always interesting conversations about politics and life. I extend my deppedt condolences to his family at this very difficult time and wish them much strength and comfort.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Randy passing away. I knew Randy for about 17 years. Although I dealt with Randy through several legal matters, my main connection was through one of his passions, horse racing. A solid person and good friend, with a great sense of humour, and the only person that ever convinced me into wagering on a 100-1 horse that actually won!?! My deepest sympathies to Caroline and the family.

I knew Randy at Osgoode Hall Law School. He was a fantastic person. Always kind, compassionate, willing to lend a hand, but always a voice of reason. He used to always say: "How does this affect me ?", which he always meant in the best of ways. He was a wonderful person, and I will miss him.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bennett family. Many of us at RBC, particularly in the Law Group, had the pleasure and honour to work with Randy over the past few years. Randy was always a gentleman, quick witted and pragmatic. We very much viewed him as a valuable adviser to our business. Randy's pragmatic advice and sense of humour will be very much missed.

I had the honour of working with Randy over several years and deeply appreciated his honesty, common sense, and sense of humour. He worked hard and while achieveing great success in his law career, never lost touch with everyday people and their challenges and accomplishments. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and colleagues; we will all miss him.
