BERLAND, Alwyn - 93, passed away March 1, 2014 with his family by his side. He leaves his wife of 72 years, Jayne, (née Epstein); four children, Kerry (Kati Berland), Kevin (Rebecca Shapiro), Jody (David Hlynsky) and Lisa (Jim Earls); four grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. Born in Chicago, he was a WWII US Navy Veteran, University of Chicago graduate, Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge University, professor of English at Kansas State University, Chair of the English Department and Dean of Arts at the University of Saskatchewan-Regina, Executive Secretary of the Canadian Association of University Teachers, Dean of Humanities and Professor of English at McMaster University and visiting professor at Nanjing University. He was a longtime academic freedom advocate, member of PEN, founding editor of the Wascana Review and first Chairman of the Bertrand Russell Editorial Project at McMaster University. He loved classical music, opera, theatre, literature and art. Alwyn was a matchless storyteller, genial host, good friend, wise counsel, and loving husband and father. A reception will be held March 9, 2-4 p.m., Lynett Funeral Home, 3299 Dundas St. W., and a memorial service in early summer (Facebook: Remembering Alwyn Berlan d). In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name to Amnesty International or Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated. Family thanks Dr. Derkach and West Park LTC staff for their care and kindness.
