ANN DORIS CAMPBELL (nee McLAUGHLIN) Passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 16, 2011, in her 94th year. Ann was the beloved wife of the late Paul Law Campbell. She leaves behind her sons John David, Paul and Grant; her daughters-in-law Janine, Lori and Diane; and her grandchildren Emily, Taylor, Jesse, Trevor, Shawn, Nicole and Braydon. Ann was predeceased by her daughter Pauline and by her sister Evelyn, her brothers Harvey and Frank and her parents John and Mary (Osborne) McLaughlin. Mom was born on October 18, 1917 in Toronto and grew up in East York, where she met her future husband Paul. Married in August 1940, they spent 69 wonderful years together until Dad's passing in April 2009. Mother was a born athlete and became a prominent figure in women's baseball in the 1930s and 40s, playing for the Robert Simpson Co. women's team. In those pre-television days, women's baseball was a popular, widely followed pastime and as catcher for her team, Mom was dubbed "Beauty Behind The Bat" by the Toronto sports press. Mom and Dad moved to Scarborough in 1956, to a home they were to occupy for the next 50 years. In addition to raising her family there, she worked at the Calderone's stationery store in the Parkway Plaza, and later at the Bay in Eglinton Square. She loved gardening, housework and cooking and was one of the original congregants of the Parkway Bible Church, which she attended throughout her life. Mom was totally devoted to her family and was always ready to welcome us home, especially for her marvellous Sunday dinners. We will miss Mom's love, her laughter and her dynamic energy, but we are deeply grateful for the wonderfully long time we had her in our lives. Friends and relatives will be received at the SHERRIN FUNERAL HOME, 873 Kingston Road (416-698-2861), Toronto (west of Victoria Park), on Saturday, April 30, 2011 for visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. to be followed directly by a memorial service. Our sincere thanks are expressed to the staff at Leisureworld - Ellesmere nursing home, for the care and quality of life they provided to Mom in her final years.
