HILARY MEGAN RIDER Died peacefully, in the company of family, on July 19, 2013 at North York General Hospital. Born in Tonteg, Wales, Hilary was a bright, vivacious, and gracious hostess and a raconteuse of the first degree; her house was a home to everyone. We will never forget evenings spent around her kitchen table at 50 Sheldrake Blvd., with food, drink, and conversation at the ready, and the door open to all her neighbours. Her enthusiasm for golf, bridge, travel, parties, jokes, new stories, and a glass of wine was unquenchable. Her open heart, sincere caring, and keen listening made her a confidante to young and old alike. Her house was a hub to a giant network of friends, and a port to children, grandchildren, grand-children-friends, and anyone who met (and loved) "grandma". Hilary was an enthusiastic and supportive wife who raised four children and pursued a career in finance. She loved Toronto and Canada, which manifested in her political activism: she worked on many campaigns for her beloved Tories with interest and fire. Around the house, she was an incredible pinch-hitter, adapting instantly when fresh-baked pies tumbled to the floor, or surprise guests arrived at her door. The evenings could often find her regaling neighbours and friends, while baking a Scottish shortbread, cooking soup, or sewing prom dresses. She was a loving mom, an involved grandma, and a fun and loving "GG", always ready to put on a costume, pick up a toy banjo, and sing, dance, and play with her family. She is incredibly missed by her husband of sixty-five years, Earle; by brother Merfyn (Eleanor); by children Laura (Bob), Mark (Maureen), Valerie (Ron), and Cindy; grandchildren Andrea (Pierre), David (Dawn), Jennifer (Ian), Steph (Devin), Courtney; and great-grandchildren, Ishai, Gabrielle, Natalia, Elynn, Hilary, Mia, and Emerson. Predeceased by sister Glenys, and brothers David and Gwyn. Beloved of sister-in-law Zetta, nieces and nephews Alison (Bill), Jennifer (Hans), Owen (Sarah), Brenda (Bill), Adam (Sharon), Melissa, Jeff (Jill), Drew, Sian, Patty, Andrew, Brad (Mary), Sydney, Alex, Doug and a wide network of cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends. A service will be held at the Visitation Centre, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, east side entrance, on Sunday, July 28th from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m. Please visit the memorial site http://www.etouch.ca/ and scroll down to Hilary Megan Rider to leave comments, photos, or remembrances. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders or the Yonge Street Mission will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
