KATHLEEN MARY REPKA February 10, 1918 - December 8, 2012 Daughter of Agnes and Drake Shelton, was born in Rosedale, Alberta. After receiving her BA from the University of Alberta, Kathleen was prevented from going to graduate school because of the prevailing preference for male candidates. However, she took matters into her own hands and after teaching in one-room schoolhouses, she moved to Ottawa to accept a more challenging position with the government. After the War, she relocated to Toronto, where she met Bill Repka, whom she married in 1948. Both were stalwarts of the union movement and were fiercely engaged in the struggle for social justice. Although it was unusual for women of that era to have a job outside the home, Kathleen managed to raise two sons while working in educational publishing, including many years as an editor at Copp Clark. She had a wide range of interests and, in later years, was a founding member of the Older Women's Network. She was predeceased by her husband Bill and sister, artist Margaret Shelton. She is survived by her sons Joe (Debby) and Paul (Carol Hubert); grandchildren Joanna Rossouw (Danie), Elias and Chloe; great-grandchildren Natanya and Maria Jane Rossouw; niece Hilary Shelton (Martin Springett) and their children Rebecca Springett and Miriam Springett (Dennis Ngariuku); her brother Drake Shelton; and a host of other nieces and nephews and their families. It has been many years since Kathleen lived in the West, but the Badlands, which her sister Margaret portrayed so strikingly, always meant home to her . A private service and cremation have taken place. A memorial service will be held in the Spring/Summer of 2013. If you would like to receive information regarding the upcoming memorial service, please contact Morley Bedford Funeral Services, 416-489-8733, to leave your name and contact information. If desired, donations may be made to the Older Women's Network or Oxfam Canada.
