Lorena May (Fisher) BATES

BATES, Lorena May (nee Fisher) - Lorena (Lorry) passed on quietly with family by her side at Providence Centre, Scarborough on Sunday, May 20, 2012 in her 83rd year. Beloved wife of the late Donald J. Bates (1999), Loving mother of Donald W. (deceased 1998) and Robert and his wife Patricia Bylok. Dear sister of Doreen Bendell (Robert), Douglas Fisher (deceased) and his wife Diane Boyd, sisters-in law Jackie Bates of Coburg and Mary Alexander. Lorry was active in and loved athletics all of her life from teenager until her last year and was a Champion in 3 sports. In her late teens and 20s, Lorry was a star softball player in the Ladies League at Sunnyside, the top league in Ontario at the time. She continued her baseball career at Coxwell Stadium when she and Don moved to the east end of Toronto to raise their family. She participated in the World Championships twice during that time, in Orange, California and Stratford, Connecticut. Lorry had an illustrious 5 pin bowling career as well. Her bowling prowess helped her Toronto Ladies team win 4 Canadian Championships, the last one in 1968. As well as being a National Champion, Lorry's name appeared in the record books several times. One of her proudest accomplishments was rolling an 1132 triple in December 1967 while playing on a team with her son Bob. At the time this was the highest three game total ever recorded. In 1991 Lorry was inducted into the 5 Pin Bowling Hall of Fame. After retiring from 5 pin bowling at the top of her career to spend more time with family, Lorry pursued her passion for Lawn Bowls. She has been a member of the Cosburn Park Lawn Bowling Club for 50 years. Once again, Lorry showed her athletic ability by winning 3 Ontario Championships. Still, at the age of 82, she was playing in and winning local tournaments. When not playing or watching sports, Lorry was a passionate and prolific knitter. Her needles and wool were never far from her side. At Lorry's request no Funeral Service will be held. A Memorial Visitation will be held at the SHERRIN FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION & TRIBUTE CENTRE, 873 Kingston Rd., 416-698-2861 (West of Victoria Park Ave.), on Thursday, May 24, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
