SULTMANIS, Dr. Lydia - 1921 - 2012 Lydia (Lidija) Sultmanis (Straumits) was born in Riga, Latvia on August 21, 1921; daughter of Janis Straumits and Emma Hartmanis, granddaughter of Andrejs Straumits and Anna Mednis. She met her future husband Richard while both were studying medicine at the University of Riga. Together they fought through hard times during the war, evacuating from Riga to Germany to eventually settle in Canada. Graduating with medical degrees, Lydia with her husband Richard opened their own practice in Toronto. Lydia was blessed with four children: Dainis, Sylvia, Normund and Raymond. She was the beloved and cherished Omama of seven grandchildren: Andrew, Lisa, Kristine, Erik, Richard, Maira and Alina. Predeceased by her brother Vidvuts Straumits in Sweden. Lydia and Richard recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary and 73 blessed years together. Surrounded by her beloved family and friends, she passed away peacefully on November 30, 2012. She will be forever loved, cherished and missed, but always alive in the hearts of her husband, sons, daughter, grandchildren, relatives and dear friends at home and abroad. A celebration of her life will be held at York Cemetery and Visitation Centre, 160 Beecroft Rd., North York (north of Sheppard Ave., west of Yonge St., 416-221-3404), on Saturday, December 8, 2012, with visitation from 1:30 until service time at 2:00 p.m. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto for their excellent care of our dear Lydia.
