Mariye (Akiyama) Tela

MARIYE TELA (AKIYAMA) Born October 25, 1920 in Vancouver, BC, of Japanese descent. A proud Canadian, English was her only spoken language. Her parents, Mr. Kametaro Akiyama and Mrs. Masano (Kobayashi) Akiyama owned a drycleaners on Grandville St. During the war, Marie was sent to Hamilton to work as a housecleaner. Future silver linings... After the war she moved to Montreal. Marie was athletic, talented and creative. Tennis, badminton, skiing, field hockey and even a round or two of golf back in the day. Singing part time for CBC radio, she met her husband Carlo at St. Christopher's, one of the first children's group homes in Toronto. Married in '61, their son Paul was born when Marie was 41! An amazing homemaker, wife and mother, Marie prepared delicious foods from many corners of the world. She enjoyed mushroom hunting, gardening and rug hooking. Following Carlo's career path, Marie lived in Winnipeg, MB, Moosejaw, SK, Midland, ON (Paul and Marie loved going fishing together here), retiring in Nanaimo, BC. After Carlo's passing, Marie joined Paul for too short a time in a familiar place, Ancaster-Hamilton, ON. A Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Marie never saw the Leafs win another Stanley Cup - even by the age of 90! Marie lived a wonderful life and will be missed tremendously. A private family funeral has taken place. In memory of Marie, please consider doing an act of kindness. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home 'Ancaster Chapel', 905-648-3852.
