MICHAEL O'REILLY

MICHAEL O'REILLY (Veteran, World War II; Retiree, Imperial Oil Ltd; Father of "9 too many") Family, faith and his country defined Michael O'Reilly of Courtice, Ontario, who, after a brief illness, died at the age of 87 on January 14, 2013. Michael was born in Newarthill, Scotland on March 11, 1925 to the late Michael and Mary Ann. Four years later, his family sailed for a better life in Sarnia, Ontario. During the darkest days of the depression, the O'Reilly family relied on St. Joseph's Parish in Sarnia for faith and community and he remained firmly committed to his faith throughout his life. In 1943, Mike joined the 67 Highland Light Infantry of Canada and served with distinction overseas. He was affected profoundly by his experience and although his love of Canada and our treasured rights never wavered, he was also all too aware of the extraordinary cost of those freedoms. He was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 637, where he counted many wonderful friends. Not long after high school, Mike embarked upon his career with Imperial Oil, beginning as a test boy in the Sarnia refinery. He was a keen young man with bright ideas which shone in his later work as a systems analyst at the Don Mills office. Ready for a rest, forty-three years later, Mike retired in 1985. An avid curler in his younger days, he remained a staunch fan of the great Canadian sport. However, family was truly the foundation of Mike's life, with Mary Jane (Hurley) of Sarnia, his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, at the centre. He also leaves behind his nine children: Maureen (John Fitzgerald), Margaret Anne, Michele Palmer (Paul), Elizabeth Scullion (Stephen), Michael (Kristin Tracy), Mary Teresa (Nadir Karamat), Mary Jane (Allan Julia-Franco), Shawn (Loretti) and Susan (Jim Esposito). Twenty-four grandchildren completed Mike's brood and his Courtice home was the site of much merriment at frequent family get-togethers. He was deeply loved by Rachel, Rebecca, Adrian, Luke, Paul, Shawn, Carly, Grant, Claire, Julia, Michael IV, William, Meaghan, Spencer, Blake, Danielle, Jasmine, Alex, Nina, Jake, Jamie, Jordan, Maddy and Alana. Dear sister Teresa Davies (Ted) of Sarnia and many nieces and nephews remain behind. Mike was predeceased by siblings Mary, Ann, Patrick and Jamie. Mike's generous spirit and keen wit will also be missed by his in-laws: Catherine and Gus Park, Reverend Jack Hurley, Nora and Al MCDonell, Terry Hobin, Margie and Ken Greenaway. He was predeceased by Dorothy Hobin and Fred and Mary Hurley. Relatives and friends may call at MCINTOSH- ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME LTD., 152 King Street East, Oshawa (905-433-5558), on Friday, January 18th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Prayers at 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 3800 Courtice Road, Courtice, on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Society of Canada.
