Sheila Frances SMITH

SMITH, Sheila Frances - Resident of the George Hees wing at Sunnybrook Hospital Veteran's facility, passed away February 9, 2013. She was born February 20, 1920 to John and Brigid Breen (nee Hickey) in St. John's, Newfoundland. Sheila enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces on August 21, 1943 in St. John's, Newfoundland. Due to the U-boat threats, she was temporarily housed in St John's. In September she was transferred to Halifax and subsequently sent for basic training in Kitchener, Ontario. After basic training, Sheila moved to Ottawa for Army Procedures training, and then was posted to Montreal for administrative duties. A year later, she was assigned to Halifax to work in the medical and service corp. She received her discharge in February of 1946. While in Halifax, Sheila met her husband, Haydon, who was serving in the Royal Canadian Navy and they were married in Toronto on December 28, 1945. Sheila is preceded in death by her husband, Haydon D. Smith, and her seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughters: Maura, Brenda Warner (Jim) and Martha; her grandchildren: Katherine (David), Elizabeth, Maeghan (Joe), Marta and Jonathan and great- granddaughter Frances. Our gratitude to all the staff of "L" Wing, third floor and special thanks to Eva and Nebiha, Sheila's personal caregivers. Visitation from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Rd., Toronto (east gate entrance off Mt. Pleasant Rd.).
