Teruo IZUKAWA Obituary

IZUKAWA, Teruo (Ted), MD, FRCP(C), FACC Passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 17, 2017. Beloved husband of the late Kumiko (Joyce) Izukawa. Devoted father to Dennis and Sandy, Terumi and Steve, Ian and Ann. Cherished Grandpa to Sean, Douglas and Fiona, Kumiko, Grant, Akemi, Nicole, Timothy, Andrew and Natalie. Predeceased by parents, Sakuhei and Kane Izukawa. Lovingly remembered by siblings Misao (the late Nick) Nishikawa and Mariko and Arthur Ikeda. Will be missed by many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends, including Dave, Janet and TJ. Ted was born in Vancouver. After being moved inland to work on the sugar beet farms during the war, the Izukawa family relocated to Toronto where Ted attended Harbord Collegiate and played on the basketball team. He completed medical school (5T6) at the University of Toronto, then went on to do residency in cardiology in London and Cambridge in the UK. This was followed by a Fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He returned home to become Director of the Heart Clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children until his retirement in 1996. He was Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto and a proud Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as the American College of Cardiology. Ted was an active volunteer and quiet leader at the Toronto Buddhist Temple for many years. He was an avid golfer and loved the Toronto Blue Jays. Unfortunately, he lost the love of his life, Joyce, in late 2014 and was never quite the same afterwards. Ted was a thoughtful, hardworking, dedicated family man who had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. Special thanks to Myrna, Glichelle, Julius, Josette, Rosemarie and Yannique for their loving care over the years. You will always be a part of our family. Thank you to Dr. Sid Feldman, Dr. Shelley Veinish and the wonderful palliative care team including nurse Siva and Dr. Nicholas. Family and friends will be received at HIGHLAND FUNERAL HOME, Scarborough Chapel, 3280 Sheppard Avenue East, at Warden Avenue, 416-773-0933, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, June 24th. Funeral at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Toronto Buddhist Temple, 1011 Sheppard Avenue West. Private cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers and koden, donations will be gratefully accepted by the Toronto Buddhist Temple or the SickKids Foundation.
