CHRIS STOCKWELL Obituary

STOCKWELL, CHRIS Born March 9, 1957 London, Ontario Died February 10, 2018 Toronto, Ontario Chris lived a full, loving and eventful life. Born in London, Ontario in 1957 to Winfield (Bill) and Loretta Stockwell, Chris was the second oldest of five (George, Edward, Fredrick and Kathleen). At the ripe age of 25 Chris became inspired at the prospect of public service, running successfully for Etobicoke Council. Chris moved on to provincial politics, representing the riding of Etobicoke Centre, as an integral member of the Progressive Conservative government. During this time, Chris held the position of cabinet minister for a variety of high profile portfolios including Labour, Environment and Energy. However, he may be best remembered for his time as Speaker of the House. During his time as Speaker, Chris's family lived in the historic Speaker's Apartment in Queens Park. It became the site of a gaggle of young children playing ball hockey in the venerable halls of the historic building, which Chris believed brought an appreciative twinkle to the eyes of the portraits of long ago politicians. Chris left provincial politics as a sitting member in 2003 but was never far away from the pulse of politics, working as a political advisor, radio commentator and consultant on all things political. Chris passed in the home of a close and devoted family member, surrounded by his friends and family, he was 60 years old. Married to Charlene Thornley from 1982 until 2004, Chris leaves behind his two loving children, Kale and Victoria, who cared for him tirelessly during his struggle, and his two grandchildren Norah and Opal. A drop-in gathering to honour Chris will be held on Thursday, March 8th, 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Crooked Cue (3056 Bloor Street West). Online condolences at www.lynettfuneralhome.ca
