John Magder Obituary

MAGDER, Dr. John - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John who died peacefully at home on Thursday, March 8, 2012 in his 81st year. John leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years, Eleanor. He is survived by his four children Lee Anne, Michelle, Scott and Gillian, their spouses Joe, Dale, Debbie and John, his seven grandchildren Austin, Alex, Jamie, Dylan, Jake, Sylvie and Luke and his "puppy-boy" Max. Born in Toronto, John attended and played basketball at Jarvis Collegiate. John graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School - Class of 5T6. For over thirty years John enjoyed his Family Medicine practice in Scarborough which included working late nights in the emergency room at Toronto East General Hospital and assisting the elderly at Providence Villa. John cared deeply for his patients. In the early 1990's John took on the position of Medical Consultant with the Ministry of Health until his retirement. In his later years John focused his attention on his family and their farm property in Orono. Throughout his medical career John was passionately involved with a number of organizations including: the newly formed Ontario New Democratic Party (Vice- President), Planned Parenthood, Providence Villa (Board of Directors), Toronto East General Hospital (Chief of Family Practice), Hospital Council of Metropolitan Toronto - Medical Advisory Committee (Chairman). At his 50th reunion for the Class of 5T6, John noted his proudest accomplishment was "appearing before the Hall Commission (1961) in active support of Universal Health Care". His achievements will live on. At John's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Stephen Lewis Foundation (www.stephenlewisfoundation.org). Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.mceachniefuneral.ca Arrangements entrusted to the McEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME, 905-428-8488.

Dr Magder was our family docor until he left to join the MOH. He was very caring and made many housecalls, as I had 3 young children at that time. RIP.

Dr. Magder was our family physician from 1960 just after my oldest brother's (Rick) birth, followed by myself (Scott) Andrew and finally Anthony, and of course my father and mother W.Greig and Joan. He made you feel that he was your very own personal doctor, dedicating his time, one who you could trust with everything. A great and wonderful man who will always be fondly remembered in the nurturing of our health and a significant part of our family.

My sincere condolences to the Magder family. John worked with us as medical consultant at the Ministry of Health for many years. He was warm, kind and clever. He had integrity and an unwavering commitment to public healthcare. I considered him a friend as well as a colleague. He touched the lives of everyone he worked with.

There were days they were busy but they'd fit you in. TRUST!!! abounded.
From Dr Bush to Dr's Kilty, Cranston, Magder and another? They were the best.
Great team. Then Dr Cranston and some young Dr's. At the end I'd be the only one in the waiting room. Dr C would call me...couldn't resist looking around as if it wasn't my turn. Sad day in medicine to see them retire. Sad day for the Magder family.

Dr. Magder was in practise with our doctor, Dr. Peter Cranston. Boy, the stories we could tell! My family had been going to Dr. Cranston and Dr. Magder (when Peter wasn't available) since the early 1950's. I have fond memories of them being on the corner of Victoria Park and Danforth. Dr. Magder was truly a wonderful, caring doctor whom we should all be thankful for. His contributions and dedication to the field of medicine was unprecidented and how he changed health care will always be his legacy. Our family were truly indebted to all those doctors in that group and many of those doctors (Peter and John) spent a lot of time at our home caring for our various family members (primarly, me!) Without Dr. Magder and Dr. Cranston, I probably wouldn't be here today. For that, our entire family is truly grateful! They just don't make them like him any more! Our heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Magder family at this difficult time. God Bless you all! With much appreciation for everything he did not only for our family, but others as well, the Collins Family (Ken Collins, Barbara Snelling (nee Collins)

To the Magder Family,
I went to high school with John at Jarvis and later worked with him at TEGH in emergency. Later I worked for him as his office nurse. He is someone whom I have always held in high regard.
Always a professional. My thoughts are with your family.

I wish to express my sympathy to the members of Dr. Magder's family. During part of his affiliation with Providence Villa I was the Director of Pharmacy (1986-2004). I truly appreciated his support as we developed the clinical pharmacy program. May good memories sustain you through this difficult time.

My sincere condolences to John's family.
I had the pleasure of working with John at the Ministry of Health several years back. He was a pleasure to spend time whether the topic of discussion was the growth of universal healthcare or how to raise a puppy. He was a kind, funny man.

I would like to express my sympathy to the members of the Magder family. I was the President (1982-1993)of Providence Villa during some of the time that John attended the medical needs of residents and have many fond memories of him along with Drs. Cranston and Kilty who together
provided a great service to Providence for which we are forever grateful

With sadness I learned of your passing. You were my first family physician who made house calls and chose early on to open a practice at Marsh Rd. And Danforth. You treated our family well and infused in us all, including my father, the social democratic traditions for a better society. You not only made us heathy, but also wise. You will be missed.

Scott, you'll remember that I knew your dad when he was in practice with Dr. Kilty and Dr. Cranston (my family physician). I was so tickled when you brought Jacob to the 6 year old select tryouts and realized that you were his son. It seemed to me then that life really does connect us as in the spokes of a wheel. May the wonderful memories you have of your father carry you through the difficult days and laughter and joy be reminders of his life well lived. Thinking of you, Debbie, Jacob and Lucas as well as the rest of your family. Al and Sherry Smyth
