I think the year was 1969 when a gentleman and his wife showed up at my house in Etobicoke. I was 11 years old. He was negotiating the purchase of my brothers Harley Davidson. At one point, my sister said to me, "Do you know who that is? That's Johnny Sombrero, leader of the Black Diamond Riders."
I was blown away. The leader of a notable bike club...at my house! For all these decades, that was always a bragging right for me. How many of my friends could beat that for a cool story? Rest in peace dear Sir!

I have just read about the loss of a good man who passed about eight years back. Sometime in his early twenties he bought an Indian motorcycle from me. I bought it around age 13 as a basket case, built it up and put it up for sale around age 14. Our house shook as Johnny and some BDR members rode down our dead end street to see the bike. I think he was in his early twenties. He bought the bike and invited me to their clubhouse. I took him up on the invite.
There is a picture on line of Johnny on a black Indian and I wonder if its the one he bought from me.
I never saw him again but he left a lasting impression of a great guy.

I met Johnny in the summer of 2015. My buddy and I were riding up Warden in the country. As we came to a stop sign, this car pulls up beside us and a solid looking chap leans out the window asking for directions. I notice that there is a lot of BDR material in the vehicle. I said to the chap `do you know Johnny Sombrero, I have wanted to meet him all my life`. He looks at me puzzled and says `I am Johnny Sombrero`. I almost fell off of my bike. Finally I got to shake the hand of the GREAT ONE. A brief encounter in the middle of nowhere.....I told my friends the next day and they said `what was he like`. My reply was `a perfect gentleman``, who even in his 80`s looked tougher than nails. Thanks Johnny for the incredible memory and rest in peace.

I met John through the gun fraternity. He kept asking me to join them for lunch at the "Coffey Time" near Keel & Wilson.
I debated to myself if this was a good idea but, eventually, I went in.
John was a great host as well as his ever present sidekick, Peter.
I enjoyed my brush with fame and danger.
One day, I remarked to Johnny that, for an outlaw biker, he was a remarkably pleasant man.
John stated "I treat everyone like I'd like to be treated myself. Unless, they prove differently".
I miss those coffee days more than I czn say.
A really decent guy!
RIP to a true Canadian original.

Johnny, you were a living legend. I was born in Toronto, and I can still remember seeing you guys when I was a kid, jumpin' on those old Harley kick-starts. From that point, I always wanted to have a motorcycle and get to ride with you guys. Many years later, after moving to Bracebridge, Muskoka, my dream came true. The first time I met you at one of your meetings, I found out what you were really like a kind-hearted family-man, with a great love for your wife and family. I often think of when I first got my BDR T-shirts and sweat-shirt; you said, Wear it proud brother, and that I did. The BDR's are the best motorcycle club around, and may they ride forever. I am honored to have known you. I'll miss you my friend.

Mid 60's...The rumble of Knuckles and Pans in Toronto's west end as you pulled into the neighbour's drive. I stood in awe...oil dripped on the driveway, side stands dug into the asphalt, women called their children in from play.
I gotta have some of this.
50 years later I'm still ridin. Thanks for the inspiration Johnny.
Long may you run my friend.
