J. GILCHRIST Obituary

GILCHRIST, J. Brian - When you search for ancestors, you find great friends. At Brampton Civic Hospital on May 1, 2014, John Brian Gilchrist, beloved and only son of Audrey Long (Toronto) and the late John "Jack" Gilchrist (Calgary). Brian, a proud 4th generation Torontonian, and 9th generation Canadian of English, Irish, Scottish, German, and American descent, was born April 7, 1956 in Toronto Western Hospital. A lifelong interest in genealogy and local history led Brian to a host of friends in genealogical and archival circles. Most recently he was the reference archivist at the Peel Art Gallery Museum and Archives (PAMA) happily working in the county of his pioneer McClure family. Brian published a definitive genealogy entitled The "Clan" McClure: Historical Highlights. Compiler and editor of Inventory of Ontario Newspapers 1793-1986, Brian also wrote many genealogical articles, and contributed to numerous radio and television programs on genealogical topics. His speeches were full of information and humour-with an unmatched style of delivery that drew crowds. Brian will be missed by many relatives, friends, and colleagues. In April, Brian entered hospital for the last time, after a series of illnesses... "then he slept with his ancestors." Hebrew, 1 Kings 14:20. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., Toronto, at Windermere Ave., east of Jane subway, Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at The Cathedral Church of St. James, 65 Church Street, Toronto, Ontario, on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. Interment St. James Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to The Cathedral Church of St. James Restoration Fund or Sleeping Children Around the World. Online condolences may be made through www.turnerporter.ca

As sixth generation McClures in Canada, our family has long appreciated the extensive research Brian conducted for the book “The Clan McClure – Historical Highlights”. Brian was always patient with any questions I had and always helpful. He also had extensive knowledge of other families in the Brampton/Georgetown area and could also tell me history of our paternal ancestors, the Reids. He will be greatly missed by many. May he rest in peace free from his longstanding health concerns.

I am sorry to find out about Brian's passing. My thoughts are with you Audrey as I know how close you and Brian were. Many times I sat with you and Brian at the family reunions. You two were a real bright spot at the reunions. Thank you to you and Brian for creating the family history books and sharing your stories with my family at the reunions.

I think I first met Brian in the late 80s at Gene-O-Rama in Ottawa. I always looked forward to seeing him at OGS Conference. There are very few genealogy speakers that can match Brian for his knowledge and his humour. I will really miss him. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I am saddened to hear that Brian has lost his long and courageous struggle with chronic health setbacks. My sympathy to Audrey at this time of loss and grief and my appreciation of the support she has afforded Brian in trying times without which his extensive research and genealogical legacy would have been the less for all of us.
I was privileged to have been able to add some details to his knowledge of his McClure family lines in Co. Antrim, which he put to good use and graciously acknowledged in his encyclopaedic 'green' book, The "Clan" McClure: Historical Highlights.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Brian but saw him on television many times and heard a great deal about him from my sister. Thoughts and prayers are with you Audrey.

I am sorry to hear of Brian's passing. As one of his fellow servers at St. James I appreciated his wit and stories. I regret that as I am in Cambodia right now I will be unable to be there for his last service, but will be thinking of him, and of you, Audrey. Many condolences. Kerry

I was so sorry to hear of Brian's passing. Audrey, my sympathy to you, you will miss him so much. Brian was a constant friend to me over so many years. I will miss his humour, his expertise in genealogy and his talent for winkling out genealogical facts that no-one else could find. Sleep well my friend.

Brian was a friend and colleague for many years. We shared an interest in history and genealogy, but I know that as the years pass by, I will be able to recall his great wit, insight, knowledge and a style all his own. Brian made significant contributions to genealogy and local history, inspired many to do the same and was a devoted and kindly friend and mentor to us all. While he no longer walks the stage, his footsteps will be heard for years to come and as we pursue our own genealogies and family histories, Brian will be remembered.
