PROSPER BRIOUX Obituary

PROSPER (ROSS) BRIOUX August 31, 1915 - January 2, 2013 Ross Brioux left us peacefully January 2, 2013. He was 97. He loved life and enjoyed a long, healthy one. He had an idyllic childhood in Toronto's west end with his beloved parents William and Ada and siblings Wilfred, Ulrich, Gontran and Virginia. He played hockey at Western Tech and was a terror on defence. He served in France and Germany during WWII in the Provost Corps. After the war, he met the love of his life, Margaret MCCarroll. They enjoyed 65 happy years together, never more in love than in their last tender months. Ross built a cottage in Oliphant, Ontario, that provided a lifetime of cherished memories for his son Bill, daughter-in-law Cathy, grandchildren Katie and Daniel and many friends and family members. Much of that was captured on film; Ross was an active shutterbug, with precious memories collected on 16mm and 35mm film. That's when he wasn't working two jobs. Ross ran his father's confectionary business, Otten's Manufacturing, and often came home smelling of lemon meringue. Later he worked in the Sheriff's Office in Toronto. He left us with one last gift this Christmas, spent surrounded by family in the little house on Dundas Street West. Despite encroaching dementia, he maintained that steady gaze that only saw truth and goodness and a pure heart to match. Besides his immediate family, he leaves behind niece Margie and husband Peter Petersen from British Columbia and their children Jill and Mary. He was friends to the end with Best Man Jack Taglietti. Thanks to his many caregivers and "angels" from the CCAC, Pro-Home, Canes and Veterans Affairs including Judy Powell, Maria Mucka, Lucy Canales and Marivic Fortaleza, as well as kind paramedics Brian Donnelly and Rob Bronson. Thanks also to Dr. Edward Gutman and the nurses up on 6-G at St. Joseph's Hospital. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of Jane subway, on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 3055 Bloor St. W., Toronto, where Ross and his family were Day One parishioners, on Monday, January 7, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Marg, Bill, Cathy, Dan, and Katie at this sad time. I (Maurene) will always remember Uncle Pros as a man with a great sense of humour. As I look at the photo, I am reminded of my dad, Paul Brioux, who would have celebrated his 81st birthday this week. Uncle Pros will be remembered in our hearts. -- Maurene and Scott Macaulay

I'm sorry to hear of Pros' passing. I probably only met him a few times when I was a child, but in his photo, he seems to be all the Brioux men. My parents were Tommy and Betty Brioux.

We were very sad to learn of uncle Pros' passing. He was a super guy - a great uncle, a great hockey player & photographer. He will be missed.
