James Hardie Obituary

HARDIE, James David —

At St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, in his 70th year. Much loved husband of Barbara (Penny) and father of Meredydd and Amanda (Alex Grewenig). Beloved son of Mary Hardie and the late Robert G. Hardie (1999) and brother of Catherine and Peter (Brenda). Jim's absence will be keenly felt by his mother-in-law Audrey Penny, as well as by many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. A member of the Canadian film community for over 45 years, he was selfless with his time and provided wise counsel and invaluable leadership to several generations of Canadian film professionals. He will be greatly missed by a vast network of friends, colleagues and mentees. A private family service has already been held. Jim's many friends are invited to join the family at a public Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 28th from 2 until 5 p.m. at the St. James's Gate Pub, 5140 Dundas St. W. in Etobicoke.

I have not seen Jim since the early 60s when we were neighbors and good friends. Our interests diverged and that was it. I am glad to read what a successful career and family life he led. I remember as well how caring his mother was in those days and wish her and Cathy and Peter the very best as they deal with this sad event. I should also mention Jim's father, who was a father figure to me in those tough teenage years. A wonderful family.

Our sincere condolences to you and the family Barb. We are in BC caring for our grandchildren indefinitely and were stunned to hear of Jim's passing having just been in contact with him over the previous couple of weeks.
I (John) first met Jimmie when he came to RLP in '66 and ever since then we've received each other's mail. He was the busiest guy I ever met and it became clear that he wasn't just going to be an editor but running somebody's show, which he did very competently for the rest of his career.
We had many great times together with friends over the years and recently reminded each other of days we would have paid to go to work.
Jimmie knew everyone in the business and they knew and loved him. He was knowledgeable, helpful and loyal; our "go-to guy" in the biz. Above all he was a great friend. We talked a couple of weeks ago about raising a glass to our pal Al when I got back to Ontario - my loss - going to miss you pal.
May your many wonderful memories comfort and sustain you and the family through this difficult time of your lives. We are saddened that we cannot be with you on Saturday but you will be in our hearts and prayers here in BC. Cheers to Jimmie.....

We first met sometime at the tail end of the 60's. We worked together over many years and he was an outstanding professional, generous and respected human being. Jim was on the magical production ride of the 60's 70's and 80's and beyond..I was proud to be on the ride with him and who better than Jim to ride shotgun. Barry R.Bittle
