MARY SPEARS

Mary died at Briton House on Thursday, January 19, 2017. Born in Wingham in 1913, she graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1936, when she and her brother George took over the family store after the sudden death of their father. She was married to Borden Spears from 1944 until his death in 1983. They had four children: George (Kasia Seydegart), Laura Mullin (Allan), John (Elisabeth Marsden) and Tom (Deborah). Mary was a much loved grandmother of ten, and great-grandmother of nine. She was an active member and volunteer at Bedford Park United Church for more than 60 years. She loved Bruce Beach, spending 91 summers there. She was predeceased by her brother George and sisters Gracey (Suse) and Kate McDermid; and by her parents, Tom and Adella King. A service in her memory will be held in NORTHLEA UNITED CHURCH, 125 Brentcliffe Road, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, followed by a reception. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Doctors Without Borders or another charity. Mrs. Spears was our neighbour on Lawrence for many years, and a good friend and neighbour of my husband John's parents for decades. We really missed her presence when she left the house and moved away. Well into her 90s, Mrs. Spears used to go for a morning constitutional around the neighbourhood; we would cross paths as I walked the dog. My clearest memory of her was at 93, enlisting my help to save a robin who had a string tangled around its leg that had caught on a tree branch in her neighbour's yard. Not only did she notice and register the robin's plight, but she acted on it. She told me that she'd already tossed (sic!) a ladder over the back fence into the neighbour's yard. Sure enough, she had. Mrs. Spears did all the saving that day! My sole involvement was steadying the ladder, and holding onto the belt loops of Mrs. Spears's jeans, while she climbed the stepladder and successfully cut the string off the robin's leg. A life to aspire to. We are so sorry for the loss to your family of such a great lively unfettered spirit.
