Robert Macaulay Obituary

ROBERT WILLIAM MACAULAY, Q.C. Bob died on Tuesday, August 17, 2010, in his 90th year, it must be sadly reported by his family. One of Canada's truly unique and brilliant characters, he was a soldier, lawyer, husband, father and public figure of considerable distinction. Robert William Macaulay, Q.C. was born in Toronto, May 25, 1921, son of Hazel and Leopold Macaulay. He attended Upper Canada College, University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall. Called to the bar in 1948 he practiced law in Ontario for more than half a century. Bob is survived by his daughter Leslea, and his brother Hugh. He was predeceased by his wife Joy (Wecker), his son Timothy and his sister Mary Adams of Victoria, B.C. Bob's career included service overseas in Toronto's 48th Highlanders during World War II. In 1951 he followed his father's example into political service in Ontario winning election for the PC's in the Toronto riding of Riverdale. He served as a member and cabinet minister in the governments of Leslie Frost and John Robarts, holding several important economic, energy and trade portfolios. The family would particularly like to express admiration and appreciation to Paul Bordonaro, long-time companion and caregiver for his selfless friendship to Bob. Cremation and private interment. Anyone who would like to honour Bob's life may do so by making a contribution to the Macaulay Child Development Centre, 2010 Eglinton Avenue West, Suite 400, Toronto M6E 2K3, founded by his mother three-quarters of a century ago and dedicated to the support of families and, particularly, children in the northwestern area of Toronto.
