ANITA GARDINER (nee HOGAN) September 30, 1944 - March 17, 2014 Marie Anita Lucy Claire Gardiner passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto after a long struggle with multiple chronic diseases. Anita is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Geoffrey, children Mark, Neil (Cathy), siblings Evelyn Sarrazin (Rolly), Joelle Mahoney (Elwood), Richard Hogan (Minnie), sister- in-law Claire Nelson (Mike), as well as grandchildren Benjamin, Kassandra and many nieces and nephews. Anita was born in Montreal and raised in the Ottawa-Gatineau region where she developed many life long friendships. She received her R.N. from the Ottawa General Hospital in 1965. While nursing across the country in 1967 she met Geoffrey Gardiner in Edmonton and was married in Montreal in 1968 during Geoffrey's medical internship. Toronto has been home since 1972. Anita practiced nursing part time and studied to receive her BSc.N from the University of Toronto in 1995. Anita most of all loved her family. She was "Commander in Chief" of all aspects of daily living - a true Irish matriarch. She was a strong willed, independent person, open and frank with her opinions. Anita had an amazing memory for names and dates and was exceptional at staying connected with family members of all generations. Anita loved caring for elderly neighbours by helping with shopping and doctors' appointments. Her volunteer work included local canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society. Anita faced her gradually deteriorating health with acceptance and realism wanting relatives and friends to remember their individual experiences with her. Heartfelt thanks to caregivers Drs. Alan Zee, T. Robinson, S. Tarlo and especially visiting home care nurse Eugenia. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 3055 Bloor St. W., Toronto, on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Interment will be in Park Lawn Cemetery. If desired, remembrances may be made to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made through www.turnerporter.ca
