GELFAND, Barbara Anne - After a life well-lived and surrounded by her family, Barbara Gelfand, 82, passed away suddenly and without warning on April 7, 2013, and has now joined her husband, Larry Gelfand. She will be greatly missed by her sister, Carole, her children, Patte and her husband Shabbir, Michael and his wife, Ellen, Janice, Bernard, Laurie and her husband, John, and Alan, as well as her beloved grandchildren, Kristyn, Chris, Brendan, Jacob, Jordan, Joseph, Mathew, Silvia, Michael, Hannah and Jane, and her great- grandchildren, Azzurra, Sonika and Basil. She was greatly looking forward to the arrival of her fourth great-grandchild and had already started shopping and knitting. The Young and The Restless has lost a life-long faithful viewer. Barbara liked her coffee strong, played cards like a shark and was never wrong about anything. Her children and their friends will be forever grateful for her historic defeat of the "no blue jeans" policy at the high school. Barbara was renowned for her fierce laundry and ironing skills, her faith in Dr. Whittaker, her grandchildren's favourite empire cookies, her fine penmanship, her extensive wardrobe, her love of travel, her relentless shopping (and her ability to consider every item in every aisle in every store). She loved her get-togethers, especially at the cottage where many wonderful times were shared by family and friends. She will be missed. A sincere thank you to the staff of Peterborough Regional Hospital for their kindness and compassion. Visitation at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home, 5295 Thickson Rd. N., Whitby from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Then to St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 130 Watford Street, Brooklin for Memorial Mass Thursday morning (April 11th) at 10:00 a.m. In memory of Barbara, memorial donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Messages of condolence may be forwarded to barnesmemorialfuneralhome.com
