BARRY LORD Obituary

BARRY LORD Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, celebrated curator, author and pioneer in museum planning and arts management, died peacefully on March 9, 2017 in Toronto. Born in Hamilton on July 8, 1939, Barry graduated from Delta Secondary School and McMaster University and studied at Harvard University. He enrolled in the National Gallery of Canada museum training programme, launching a career that would transform the way museums, galleries and arts organizations are planned and managed. In 1981, Barry and his wife Gail Dexter Lord created Lord Cultural Resources Planning and Management. Based in Toronto, the company grew to become the world's foremost museum planning firm, working with museums and galleries across Canada, the US, Europe and Asia. With Gail, Barry wrote the essential books for the museum profession including The Manual of Museum Planning (1991) and The Manual of Museum Management (1997). More recently he developed a theory of cultural change, set out in his acclaimed book Art and Energy (2014). He loved to present his ideas to people and gave public lectures until close to the time of his death. In 2016, Barry and Gail were awarded honourary doctorates from McMaster University, Barry's alma mater. Barry is survived by Gail, his sister Lorraine and by his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at St. Mark's Church hall, 41 Bryon St., Niagara-on-the-Lake, on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, 12:00-1:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the church at 2:00 p.m. Interment in the church cemetery and reception in the church hall to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Ontario Lung Association. Friends might also consider consenting to organ donation, which made Barry's last year possible. My condolences to Gail and to all of the Lord family. Barry Lord has been a significant influence on my life. From "Towards a People's Art" to "Art and Energy", his writings have helped to clarify on my understanding of culture, history, and theory. At the same time, on the interpersonal level, I have always been impressed by the way Barry engaged as an activist. He was one who brought out the best in people. I will miss Barry, but he has left an enduring legacy.

To the Lord Family:
I went to Delta from 54-58, Barry was ahead of me but was such a vibrant person in the Student Association. I often saw articles of his achievments in newspapers across Canada, my husband was a Graduate in Cdn. History at Mac l963 and I went on to do an Art History degree at Concordia in Mtl. I was so impressed that he left such a large footprint on the Art and Academic world. So terribly sorry for your loss and thankyou for the legacy he has left us, especially Delta Grads.

Barry ....over sixty years ago I met you as a young boy ...our connection was growing up as "east-enders in Hamilton. We both had our successes, yours were superb!..I will miss our emails because you encouraged me to write and paint and simply enjoy a crazy world ...I sincerely hope we entertained each other in senior years ...our words were gentle because we were where we were when. Children. You most definitley and eventually met the perfect woman. May you find art in heaven.

The memory of Barry and his exceptional dedication to Canadian art history will always be remembered. As Barry himself wrote in The History of Painting in Canada: Toward A People's Art: "A nation without a culture has no future at all" - Barry helped make sure there would be a Canadian future.

My sincerest condolences to Gail and the entire Dexter-Lord family and company.

Barry demonstrated great compassion and boundless enthusiasm for the Museum world and will be greatly missed. We worked and traveled together in the 1990s and with so much to discover and discuss there was never a dull moment.
It was a great privilege to have collaborated. My deep sympathies go out to the family.

We were devasted to hear the news about Barry today. Having worked with him on a number of occasions over the years, I can truly say that he was the absolute epitomy of grace, style, elegance, class, charm and, of course, smarts! Will miss him every time I need a measured, thoughtful opinion on a museum matter in the future. Thinking of Gail.

You always had this unique understanding for a human condition, which made you humble but also a fierce advocate for just causes. I always knew that you would always say or do the right thing. I miss you as a friend, as a colleague, and as a truly great museum and cultural professional.

I was enrolled in Psychology 1A6 in 1957 at Mac. When the professor, I think it was Newbigging at the time posted the results for our Christmas exam. The name Barry Lord was at the very top with a mark of 98. I never really got to know him but he impressed me immensely with that performance since I only scored something like 68! Rest in peace, former classmate.

I think fondly of my years at LORD working for Barry and Gail. I was so impressed by their commitment to the company that they built and I was very proud to be a member of the team. I always enjoyed talking with Barry - hearing of his stories and the warmth that he always exhibited for those who worked for him.
