David Ezrin Obituary

EZRIN, David Lawrence - Born on December 3, 1966 in Toronto, Canada, the son of Bob Ezrin and Arlene Sarner, passed on December 4, 2008 in Los Angeles, California. He was 42 years old. David was a well- known LA musician, composer and songwriter with several gold and platinum albums and compositions on dozens of recordings. He was also a partner in Soul Surfer Records. Music and family were David's life. David was a devoted father, who is survived by his beloved daughter Zoe (13), the light of his life; his parents, Arlene Sarner and Bob Ezrin; his devoted step-parents Jerry Leichtling, Fran Ezrin and Janet Ezrin; his loving siblings, half-siblings and step-siblings: Joshua Ezrin, Sarah Ezrin, Daniel Leichtling, Geoffrey and Jennifer Repo; and his grandparents Calvin and Geraldine Ezrin. David was especially close to his aunts Judith Ezrin and Joanna Schauer (nee Ezrin), and his uncle Joseph Vankay all of whom were just a few years older than him and were more like siblings than aunts/uncles. He was also very close to his cousins Randi Aichel and Jeremy Rubolino and so many other family members. This large family beginning with Zoe and radiating outward to all of its extensions was David's greatest pride, his comfort and his safety. A service was held in Los Angeles on December 7, 2008. David was a supporter of the efforts of the MusiCares Foundation, a charitable arm of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The family grieves his untimely passing but knows that he is at peace. Good night sweet prince.

My condolences to the family. I knew David for about a year as a fellow student at Upper Canada College in Toronto. The last period of each day was a "reading period" during which time we were supposed to catch up on schoolwork. Very few students actually did work during this period and so he and I would speak out of reading period and go home early. We would cover for each other as we left the school and then meet up at the bus station before going our separate ways. Fun memories. It was nice to have know David.

Something made me think of David tonight! He was my brother Glenn's dear friend. I remember him playing air guitar in front of the mirrors of my parents house! Thinking there's a future star! He was always kind and sweet. My deepest sympathies to all of you!

How odd that my friend Penny Steel and I were just last week remembering classmates from our days at Deer Park. David's name flew prominently to our brains. I remember David as a very compassionate, sweet boy. A gentle soul. I was so sorry to discover that he's not with us any longer. Wish I'd stayed in touch. My deepest sympathies to his family, who clearly love and miss him ferociously, with a special mention to his little girl, who is lovely.

David's name came up tonight when discussing with my wife the time I did a brief stint with Lita Ford. This is the first I heard of his passing. I played a dozen or so gigs and David was my roommate. I remember him to be a kid at heart, up-beat and was into to his reggae! I'm so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I just learned of David's passing today, and reached out to a friend of his mother's to learn if this devastating news could possibly, please god not possibly be true. As I read here, it is. David was a great friend to me in a momentous time in my life. A great supporter. Such a young and wise boy trying to find his own way. His mantras to me: "Go where it is"; ( I did), "Why NOT you" (good point) and "Go forth and be fabulous" (still trying). I only remember a dear, sweet and fragile boy. How on earth did this happen to that talented, wonderful person. David, you are a great love of my life. xxxxxxxx

A good friend of mine who is working at Aurora High, got me a copy of the Yearbook when David and I were at school together. I have added a few of the photos I found. David seemed to have a knack of getting his picture all through the yearbook. Those were good years and I have amazing memories of our time together. With love, Glenn Marais

I just found this obituary while looking for David on Google. I had no idea he had passed away.
I met David when he was with the band "Contact Buzz". At the time, I was good friends with the drummer, Mike Hansen (who, at the time, was married to Kathy Bissonette). I went to their first gig and a few after that. Things didn't last long because the singer, Tony, passed away in a motorcycle accident one evening. I remember David and Mike being really upset at the loss of their friend and bandmate.
I will always remember the way David just kind of "accepted" me into their little circle and treated me like one of the band. I was pretty young and was impressed by the way David both a fantastic (and accomplished) musician with an impressive pedigree (Bob Ezrin being his dad), AND a sweet guy who cared about other people.
He was always more interested in what my life was like in the Marine Corps than what he was currently dealing with.
I will always remember David. God Bless you and may God give you peace.

It has been a while since I have visited here. Thank you to all of his friends for sharing these wonderful memories with us. It brings comfort and happiness to the family to read about David's happy times, his friendships, his playful side, his creativity and always of course his heart.

Please feel free to share as much with us as you can remember. It's particularly good for Zoe who knew her father for such a brief time to see how he was viewed by his friends and to hear stories about him and his adventures. It gives her a more complete image of him as a man.

The Ezrins all thank all of you for loving him and for helping us to keep his memory alive.

With love,

Bob

I just tried to Google my old friend Dave and got this terrible news. Dave and met in hunting-beach at Mazzoti's by the pier. He was playing a baby grand and very well. I'm not the shy type so I went up to him and asked him if I could sit in with him with the promise that I would'nt embarrass him. We played"a whiter shade of pale"and the audience loved it. We became good friends after that. He would come to my house with his dog's and we would jam and play video games all night and talk about Lita's pasta. My heart goes out to his family and his many friend's.I wish we could have stayed in touch. My eyes are filled with tears.

I didn't hear of David's passing until a few days ago. I knew him when we were young, he was 23. He was such a talented musician and so full of laughter, light and life. I'm truly shocked. He was a great person! My sympathies to his family and friends.

May the Lord's peace and healing continue to hover over David's family and friends. I will pray for special protection over Zoe.
My memory of David was not of the music world but of a jovial & creative person. We would talk hockey & 'the great one'& 'Luuuuke' & he would always also through in football talk (it was nearly Superbowl time, it was practically a religion). He was ever facinated of a 9 to 5 working person as myself. At night over the phone, he would call and joke with my mother and myself. We were so tired and wanted to go to sleep, but he could NOT stop with his chatter that we found so fun and full of wonder. Sometimes he would banter on in his rendition of French just to make us laugh. He left jovial messages on our answering machine that we would look forward to hearing much like getting a wanted letter in the mail. My mother found him so kind and respectful.
He was facinated with our life. He would ask probing questions about our life. Somehow we got into the subject of daytime outtings & it lead to "the zoo". So we went... to the San Diego zoo. His surprise of playful live animals was its own show in itself. We took a trolly ride to view the park but had to jump off (making the driver very upset) while it was still moving. There were 2 rinos playing & he just HAD to see them more. He had sparkles of joy and inquisition. He stop and spoke to nearly every child there. It is no wonder to me how deep his love is for Zoe. We bought popcorn & I think he may have even skipped a little bit *smile*.

There is joy in my heart knowing how much our loving G_d has always and still does have an unmeasureable love of David. While we all mourn his depature from here, we hold onto the hope of seeing his wonderful smile again in a place where time has no measurement.

Thank you for the opportunity to sign this guest book all this while later.

Blessings and more blessings as you live strong making David still proud.

It's heartwarming to see David's friends gathering here. This would have meant a lot to him. His time at Aurora and with all of you was among the best in his life.

Thank you for keeping his memory alive and for continuing to care.

Thanks. I look forward to seeing all of you sometime soon.

I too just heard of Dave's passing today. Like most here in the GTA, its been a while since we have been in contact with Dave, but we were able to keep tabs on him via the internet. Although I only knew Dave for a few short years, our friendship grew to the point where he was asked to be one of the ushers for my wedding. Due to committments in Cali, he was unable to attend.

He was a good person, a good spirit and always had a grin on his face. He will be missed. My thoughts go out to the family that he leaves behind.

I just learned to day of Dave's passing. Although it has been years since I had seen Dave, I have so many many memories of our time together through high school. Dave had talent and would encourage you to explore new ideas with music. (He also had the best stereo in his beat up car during high school).
The picture of the four of us at Bill's old house is a great one - Dave, Bill, myself and John. Thanks for posting that Kerrie.
I would be happy to share some memories with anyone. I hope that his family are at peace now.

Dear Bob. Back home safe and sound from Ottawa - it truly was wonderful to see you and connect again at OCFF. I appreciate the love and openness you gave to me and do hope to keep in touch. I am going to search through my old photos and see if I can find some good ones of Dave when we were 15/16 years old and having a good time together. He really was a character! Are you going to be doing anything special for the one year anniversary?

I would love to keep in touch with you through email - as you were so rushed to catch your plane back to your personal reality - it felt like we had so much to talk about!

Please contact me - it would be nice to share memories...

I was just forwarded the guest book/obituary by my father. I have been missing my brother over the holidays, and was thinking of winter days/nights spent years ago when I was just a kid and really looked-up to my big brother, Dave, and I was thinking of the King City days, of TO, and the old cottage. Anyhow, I was thinking of Dave and our lives as kids growing up in Canada, and it was nice to read the entries from Dave's old friends. I really only recognized Bill and Glen - and I wish I could share a beer with both you guys and hear you tell stories of my brother when he was in high school, etc. Anyhow, contact me if you can via email, and next time I am in TO, I will look you guys up. Thanks again to everyone for sharing your thoughts about Dave. Peace.
