Our condolences are offered to Eileen and Dennis's entire family. It is with heartfelt sadness that we share in your grief at his passing. But we remember him fondly for the friend that he always was and we will have joy when we think of him (and Eileen) in so many ways. Dennis was one of those few persons that truly deserved being referred to a as GREAT man, for that he was..great in so many ways. With some humor I often reflect on meeting him at one of the early Biomaterials Meetings that were held at Clemson U. and it was there that we became friends forever. As a scientist he was one of those on whose shoulders many stood; not the least of those being my wife Regie. Although she was not a scientist she attended that Clemson Meeting with me. At a live subperiosteal implant demonstration by Barry Sauer, she boosted herself up to a better view by leaning on Dennis's shoulders and he never uttered a word of complaint but just turned and smiled at us with understanding in his heart; what a great guy.

Dennis and I went on to get together at many meetings thereafter and sometimes Eileen was with him. Both were nothing but kindly and welcoming.
Dennis will live on in our hearts and in our prayers...We will miss him with gratitude for for having known him and with hope of seeing him again.
How fortunate you all were to have been his family and, knowing Eileen, so was he in turn.

Dennis was one of my grad supervisors. He had a wonderful ability to insist on the highest standards of science and writing, while at the same time encourage, support, and be a friend. His lessons went well past materials science and dentistry into examples of academic professionalism and the best teacher/learner relationship, that shaped my own career. He had more impact than he ever imagined. I owe him much.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Smith family. I remember (age 8) waving goodbye to you all as you went off on the ship to Canada and remember all of the good times we had subsequently when Dennis went out of his way to meet up with his sister and the bigger Smith family. My Mum and Dad, Sheila and Ieuan, pass on their support to you all and are remembering Dennis fondly.

Love

My deepest sympathy to Eileen and the family.
Dennis will live in my memories and heart as the great mentor and friend who he was for me - I owe my career and success in Canada to him. His passing is a great loss to family, friends and the biomaterials community.
Love, Dorin
