Dorothy Katz Obituary

DOROTHY SANGSTER KATZ On Saturday, October 1, 2011, Dorothy Sangster Katz died peacefully in her 98th year at Kensington Gardens in Toronto. Born in Ottawa in 1913, she was the eldest of five children of outdoorsman and writer Selwyn Egerton "Canuck" Sangster of Port Perry, Ontario and Eileen Thomson of Ottawa. Interested in literature and poetry, she was forced to abandon her studies after high school, taking a clerical position in the federal government to help support her now single mother and the younger children. By the beginning of the Second World War, she had met her future husband Sidney Katz in Ottawa. After he enlisted in the RCAF in 1941 as a radar mechanic, serving in the Eastern Air Command and, later, overseas with the RAF, Dorothy moved to Montreal to work as a reporter at the Montreal Standard newspaper. In 1943, she married Sid in Vermont on one of his leaves from duty. Following the war, Sidney and Dorothy settled in Toronto to pursue their careers in journalism and start a family. Sid wrote feature articles for Macleans Magazine and the Toronto Star, while Dorothy wrote feature articles for Chatelaine, Macleans, Canadian Geographic and other publications. She also worked for several years as Public Relations Director at Wellesley Hospital. Dorothy was a gourmet cook well ahead of her time and an enthusiastic world traveller. She will always be remembered for her indomitable spirit, her keen intelligence and her lively sense of humour. Dorothy is survived by her son Jeremy in Toronto, brother Selwyn Sangster of Waterloo, sisters-in-law Esther Robinson of Toronto and Miriam Weiner of Ottawa and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Stephen in 1989 and her husband Sidney in 2007. The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to the staff of Kensington Gardens, to Jamela and Karen for their friendship and a very special thank you to Vilma and Dolma for their devoted care over the past several years. Friends and relatives may call at the MORLEY BEDFORD FUNERAL HOME, 159 Eglinton Avenue West (2 stop lights west of Yonge St.) on Thursday, October 6th from 1-4 p.m. Private interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Farley Foundation. www.farleyfoundation.org

I know she is now at peace but that does not ease the pain of the lose. Distance made it hard to be close but I will always have great memories of the trips to Dorothy an Sid's home and I will never forget Dorothy's voice!

It saddens me to lose my beloved Aunt Dorothy, but it's good for her to be at peace. Dorothy was interested in everyone and everything — and so delightfully entertaining. I felt honoured to know her. Please know, Jeremy, that we share in your grief and are here for you.
love & hugs, Nonie (Veronica Sangster)
