Dr. Rae-Grant was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA) when I first met him, as an interviewee for Chief Administrative Officer, later Chief Executive Officer in the fall of 1988. Happily he gave me the nod which led to a 23 year relationship with Canadian Psychiatry, of which he was an eminent leader. Early days in my employment during the CPA Annual Meeting in Saskatoon, a presentation was made to him of his portrait, in copper, mounted on oak and bordered by the Rae-Grant Tartan, which had been made by my father. After the dinner he invited me to his suite and poured me a single malt, noting that "one day, perhaps I might eventually call him Quentin, but not yet". That day did come, and I had the pleasure of meeting and greeting him as Quentin, over the years, with remembered appreciation for his graciousness and personal warmth. Dr. Rae Grant was a great Canadian psychiatrist, an eminent teacher and builder in child and all psychiatry. He was friend and mentor to many and his contributions to the development and current status of the Canadian Psychiatric association are legion. He had no hesitation in working for the best outcome of all that he took on in his career. Harry Prosen MD.

I am saddened to learn the passing away of Dr. Quentin Rae Grant. He lead the department of psychiatry at Western with style and great distinction. I was particularly privileged to work with him. London in general and Western in particular was blessed to have someone of his stature in our midst.. He was a gentleman and a very well respected leader. He will be sadly missed by us all. May God give his family the strength to bear the loss. May his soul rest in peace.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend Dr. Rae-Grant's funeral last Thursday. I met Dr. Rae-Grant as a lawyer member of the Consent and Capacity Board a number of years ago. It was always a pleasure to sit with him on Board hearings knowing that I would consistently receive from him such insightful psychiatric analysis of the patients appearing before us . He always served the interests of these patients extremely well. His medical explanations were of great assistance to me and my fellow panel members during out deliberations and in reaching the panel's decisions as well as enabling me to write the accompanying reasons. Dr. Rae-Grant was a real gentleman with a wide variety of interests and a wonderful conversationalist. He will be sorely missed.

I am Quentin's first cousin, and grew up with him in Cults, Aberdeenshire, Scotland where Quentin's father, Rev. Alexander Grant, was minister at Cults West Parish Church. Although Quentin was fourteen years my senior, we remained close at Gordon's College and in Cults, and even when he left for Guy's. After he moved to North America, first to Johns Hopkins, then to Sick Kids in Toronto, we remained in contact when I left Cambridge for the University of Alberta in Edmonton; Quentin was the best man at my wedding in Vancouver in 1973. I am sorry for his passing, of course, but take strength from my memories of Quentin and Naomi and the thought that Quentin's memory will be cherished by his family. Well done, thou good and faithful servant...

I first met Dr Quentin Rae Grant when I came to Toronto to do my child psychiatry.
We really got to know and work with each other when he became the Chairman of the Dept at Western very shortly after I became the Psychiatrist in Chief and Clinical Director of the London Psychiatric Hospital.
We were able to work together on a number of issues in a Dept that needed a lot of work. We were able to work together on what I think he would agree was our most significant accomplishment - the attraction of Dr Emanuel Persad from the Clarke Institute and U of Toronto to the London Psychiatric Hospital and U of Western Ont. Our interests merged into one of the most significant achievements of his and my tenures. He knew the art of making a deal! He will be missed.
To the family I extend my sincere condolences.

A great influence in Canadian psychiatry, Dr Rae Grant's life was well lived. Very few people I know who had such facility with the English language. As Chair he was a good guide and practical well wisher to many who emigrated to Canada from the UK. May his soul rest in peace.

There are very few child psychiatrists in Canada of my generation who were not influenced by Dr. Rae-Grant. He was one of my first supervisors and then mentors early in my career. He was instrumental in the beginnings of psychiatry in Canada and it was a privilege to have known and worked with him. It was always a joy to run into him at meetings and where he continued to contribute to the field. He will be missed.

Dr. Rae-Grant contributed to Canadian psychiatry on very many levels. I was fortunate as a resident to have the benefit of his tremendously knowledgeable, encouraging and perceptive supervision. His guidance in working with adolescents has been of tremendous value to me throughout my career. I am grateful to have known him and saddened to learn of his death.

I am very sad that Quentin has passed away. His legacy as a leader in Psychiatry in Canada is well established. In the last few years, as the chains of his many offices fell away he had more time. We met every few weeks to have lunch. He regularly complimented me on my achievements, most of which which he had facilitated. I am indebted to him. I will miss him.

I was honored to work for many years with Dr. Rae-Grant on the Consent and Capacity Board. He was a very special person. Of course it is is rare to meet someone so professionally accomplished. However, even more notably, he was kind, approachable, extremely charming and a lot of fun to sit with. He had a great laugh and some excellent stories to share. I always looked forward to having him on the panel. He was quite the gentleman. I will miss him.

Quentin and Naomi were the Power Couple in Canadian Child Psychiatry. Quentin was an eloquent spokesman on behalf of children, in his papers, books and public speaking. He facilitated the formation of the Developmental Disabilities Division of Western University were I was privileged to work with him in this much neglected field.
