FERGUS BROWN Obituary

FERGUS JAMES (FERGY) BROWN Peacefully on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, K Wing. Husband of sixty-three years to Marjorie (Barrett), devoted father of David (Chantal Samuel) and Judy (Jesse Ventura), proud Grandpa of Albert, Julie, Bethany (Mark Hardy), Rebecca and Gregory and cherished great-Grandpa of Adelaide. He was predeceased by his brother William. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on October 31, 1923; he immigrated to Canada with his parents in July 1929. He left York Memorial Collegiate in Grade XI to help support the family, before enlisting in the RCAF in September 1942. He trained as a bomb aimer and flew operationally on Lancaster aircraft with 189 Squadron, 5 Bomber Group, based in Lincolnshire. Following the war, Fergy graduated from Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. He joined, and later owned, Gould's Drug Store on Eglinton Avenue West at Dufferin Street until 2000. He was successively elected Alderman, Controller and Mayor of the City of York; serving two terms as Mayor from 1988-94 and as a member of Metropolitan Toronto Council, from 1978-94. On Metro Council, he took a particular interest in community services and housing, the CNE Association, the O'Keefe Centre and chaired the Metro Hall Building Committee. After leaving political life, he continued his public service with St. Hilda's Towers Seniors Residence, the Harold & Grace Baker Centre, Yorktown Family Services and the Learning Enrichment Foundation. He was a longtime supporter and board member of LEF, including 15 years as Vice-President, and President from 2007-09. He remained on the Board until his passing. Interment will take place at Park Lawn Cemetery following a private family service at Ward's Funeral Home, Weston. A Service of Remembrance will be held at The Learning Enrichment Foundation (116 Industry Street, Toronto, ON M6M 4L8) on Tuesday, April 30th at 2:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. In remembrance, the family hopes you will consider making a donation in Fergy's name to The Learning Enrichment Foundation (www.lefca.org).

to the family of Mr. Brown. As a former resident of the Former City of York, I remember Mr. Browns ideals and greatness as a Mayor very well. He did his best for his constitutents. May the Family be consoled that his greatness shall never be forgotten.

It is with sadness that I am sending condolences from the Wyeth's. As I recall my parents were the second people to move onto Exbury, your family the first. I remember that as little girl I though Mr. Brown the most handsomest man in the world. May you find comfort during this difficult time.

My sincere sympathies to the Brown and extended families. Like many others, I knew Fergie when he owned Goulds Drug Store (and I lived in Ontario) and then moved forward politically. A kind man. The world is a better place for having had Fergie in its presence.

To the family of Fergie Brown, I wish to extend my sincere condolences. I knew Fergie when I lived in the Borough of York many years ago and once delivered campaign leaflets for him, in 1982. He was a true gentleman and made a vital contribution to the well-being of the Borough and City of York during the times he served on its council.
