FLEMING MACKELL Obituary

FLEMING MACKELL 1929 - 2015 Former Boston Bruin and Toronto Maple Leafs star passed away peacefully October 19, 2015 at the age of 86. He was surrounded by his family and special friends in his final days. He was the son of the late John Ambrose (Jack) Mackell (two Stanley Cups with Ottawa Senators 1920 and 1921) and the late Margaret Fleming. Fleming is survived by his children Rosemary, Kathy (John), Michael, Joanne, Maureen, Sheilagh, Fleming Jr. and the mother of his children, Kathleen Grigg; his grandchildren Noah, Clara, Hannah, Addie, Gabriel, Jennifer, Maggie and Emilie; special friends Sandra, J.P., Kerry, Mario and Joyce. He was predeceased by his son Sean. A special thanks to the medical staff of the ICU at Hawkesbury General Hospital. Fleming was a fierce competitor. In his thirteen year NHL career (3 with Toronto, 10 with Boston), he won two Stanley Cups with the Leafs (1949 and 1951) and was named first team centre All Star in the 1952-1953 season with the Bruins. He was the youngest player to play on an NHL All Star team at 18 in his rookie season with Toronto. He held many playoff records for points and assists. Best known for his speed, stickhandling and penalty killing, he created excitement on the ice and was nicknamed the 'Sparkplug'. Following his NHL career, he brought hockey excitement to the Maritimes both as a player and a coach. After hockey, he had a successful career in the automotive business and devoted spare time teaching hockey to special needs students and promoting fitness among youth in local schools. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Berthiaume Family Funeral Home, 416 McGill St., Hawkesbury, ON, 877-632-8511. A funeral service will be held at St. Veronica's Church in Dorval, 1300 Carson Ave., Dorval, QC H9S 1M6, Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. The family will be present at church to receive your condolences from 1 p.m. For those who wish, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Great memories of watching him in his hay day. The priests at St. Joeseph's use him as a role model for our hockey team. Wonderful memories of meeting Flem and Rocket Richard in 1961 at the Hull Arena. They are all together now on the big ice! Condolences to the family.

My thoughts are with all of you during this sad time. Fleming was an unforgettable man and I have lovely memories of his engaging stories, competitive spirit, and deep compassion. I have been thinking of some of his antics for the past few days - mostly involving sports - and I marvel at how much he embraced the moments of his life. He loved and was so proud of his children and grandchildren and I can only imagine that he will be watching over you from above.... I am sending you my sincere sympathies and all of my healing thoughts. Yours, with love, CarolAnne

Dear Counsins God Bless all of you. May Flemming rest in peace. I remember watching him with my grandfather Bampy Scanlan...and I also remember the one time going to the hospital with my parents and he had a cast on his leg. I got to sign that cast...what a thrill. He was an anwsome hockey player. Love and hugs

Dear Susan and family,

We are so sorry to hear of the recent loss of your beloved uncle Fleming. Our family had the privilege of meeting him for breakfast a few years ago. My dad, a lifelong Bruins fan, was over the moon meeting such a legend and we will always remember Fleming's charming and endearing personality. May he rest in peace.
