Gabriele Magnotta Obituary

GABRIELE MAGNOTTA Passed away suddenly at home, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 in his 60th year. Beloved husband of Rossana. Dear father to Tommaso, Joseph and Alessia and father-in-law to Sarah and Marco. Proud grandfather of Gabriella. Devoted son of Giuseppina and son-in-law of Tommaso and Maria Di Zio. He was a great friend to so many and every day he touched the lives of all who were blessed by his presence. He will be held dear in the hearts of his sisters and brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Gabriele was born on April 9, 1949 in the small mountain town of Andretta, Italy. He emigrated to Canada when he was 11 years old. He attended York University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and played goalkeeper for the university soccer team. He worked briefly as a high school teacher before finding his true calling in business. The greatest love of Gabriele's life was his devoted wife Rossana. Throughout their many achievements in business, family always came first. Most importantly, they truly cherished their 36 years together. Gabriele was a prolific and passionate entrepreneur. He started a number of companies and eventually became CEO of Magnotta Winery, a business he co-founded and built from an idea into Ontario's third-largest winery in 20 short years. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved adventuring at home and abroad with his dogs. He was a loving and generous man who cared deeply for the welfare of others. He fought a long and courageous battle with Lyme disease these past 7 years. He was very well respected in the community and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The family will receive friends at the Fratelli Vescio Funeral Home (8101 Weston Rd., south of Langstaff Rd., 905-850-3332), on Saturday, January 2 and Sunday, January 3, 2010 from 2-4 in the afternoon and 7-9 in the evening. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary Immaculate Church (10295 Yonge St., Richmond Hill). Entombment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery (the Langstaff Rd. entrance off of Bayview St., south of Highway 7). Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation.

Dearest Rossana,
I just heard the sad news about Gabe. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Madonna was a long time ago but I remember how your eyes sparkled when you were with him or even mentioned his name. I hope all your happy memories will help you get through this sad time.

Dear Rossana & Family,

I am very sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of befriending Gabe at Downsview Secondary in the late sixties. We were good friends, went to the Quebec Winter Carnival together in '69 and even double-dated once in high school. Unfortunately I lost touch with Gabe when I went to University out of town. Gabe was always a pleasure to be with and we shared many amusing moments. I still have a couple of photos of Gabe taken in Quebec City in 1969. If you would like them, please provide an e-mail address that I can send them to.

Dear Rossana and family, I am sorry the loss of Gabriel, I want God to be strong enough to cope with this loss. I regret not having had the opportunity to know him more deeply. I never imagined a denouement so sudden. We are many miles away but in my heart will always be that wonderful person and always be proud to have been his brother.

Dear Rossana and family,
I had the pleasure of meeting Gabe at York University. Along with many other students we would meet at Central Square in between classes and share stories of what the future held for us. Gabe was always positive, supportive, and compassionate about others. His friendship with others was also first and foremost. I worked alongside your brother-in-law, Joseph, both of us young teachers and we were always impressed by Gabe's business sense and adventurous take on doing new things and meeting challenges. He will be missed by our community.

Hello Rossano, my name is Gisella. In the late 90's, when I worked at Renate's Fashion Boutique in Hillcrest Mall,we spent many hours discussing your upcoming functions and events as you worked hard and tirelessly to build your business and of course you needed to look just right. It was a great story to follow as you & your husband created, worked for and achieved the "dream" -truly in good times and in bad. Now I offer my heartfelt condolences for this great loss in your life. No words are adequate, however I feel the hardest thing to live without is memories and the hardest thing to live with is regret. My personal experiences tells me this is the legacy of our loved ones to remember the first and forget te second. May you be well- bye.

Hello Rosanna;

I offer my condolences.

I have followed you and Gabe's business adventures since the mid 80's when I bought wine juice from your Festa Juice business in the plaza on Highway # 7 near Keele.

Having worked with CN Rail at MacMillan Yard for many years, your first and second & third(?) locations were always close by for more purchasers over the subsequent 25 years.

I also followed with great interest the Magnottas' legal wranglings with Ontario's LCBO. Gabe was, and still is, the 'White Knight' for all those whom benefit from any distribution improvemnts that may creep into this aged Provincial Monopoply.

I trust, if the Legistlature ever passes a writ to privatize the distribution and sale of wine in the Province of Ontario... that someone may proffer this as 'Gabriele's Law'.

Take care.

In the cold silence of the night, the white wintery clouds slowly cross the infinite sky in search of the horizon, where time slips gently into eternity.

Gabe was a dreamer and a leader. He succeeded where others had failed, leaving a wealth of wonderful memories.

Dear Rossana

I was very sad to hear about your husband's passing. I know exactly how you feel. It is so bittersweet, in one way you're grateful his suffering is over, yet the thought of him passing away is very hard to accept. The comfort in all of this is that you have someone in heaven praying and looking over you and your family. Stay strong.

Hi Rosanna,

I was saddened to learn of your husband's passing.

I met you in 2004 and was so greatful for your generosity in sponsoring the event I held at a convention in Niagara Falls.

I never forgot this and made a point of giving the wine that I had left as gifts to many friends and family. Wine is a gift to be shared which is easy to do when the wine is as great as those Magnotta produces.

Please accept my condolences and may your husband's wonderful legacy continue for many generations.

To the Magnotta family and staff ,
I had the pleasure to meet Gabe in 2003 through our mutual love of the shooting sports . Along with a group of his close friends we travelled to some beautiful destinations to share time in the field and of course enjoy fine food and drink.
He was a man of few words. A most thoughtful and generous man. He will be deeply missed.
My deepest condolences.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Rossana and family on the passing of Gabriele. We have been customers of Magnotta since the summer of 1991 when, on the advice of friends, we purchased the wine for our daughter's wedding. Rosanna served us at the wine tasting bar to help us select the wines. At the time the store was on the site of the farm where my husband was born. It was a bit nostalgic. We have been Magnotta customers ever since as are many of our friends and relatives. Gabe will be truly missed.

Dear Rossana, my depest condolences to you and your family.

I met Gabe at Rose's Billiards when he came to see his friend Tony Rose in 1974. From that day on I always thought we had a special connection and was happy to see him come up the Billiard's stairs with that great smile. Those days are gone, but I remembered Gabe fondly all these years and am thankful for the chance to write these words. When we drove past the winery on the 400 I'd brag to my wife,"I know Gabe Magnotta from way back when, what a fantastic guy"

Cara Rossana e famiglia,

I have long been impressed by Gabe's determination and yours, to fight against adversity and unfairness, whether it be in business or in the tough struggles of life which included, horribly, Lyme Disease.

Gabriele has left an outstanding legacy, which he built of course with you.
