BOWES, Harry - Of Whitchurch Stouffville, Ontario Harry Bowes, beloved husband to Marjorie and father to sons Wayne and Brian, passed away peacefully August 2, 2010 at Sunnybrook Hospital in his 87th year. He is survived by his brother Arthur and Vicki Bowes and sisters Joyce Flaherty, Dorothy and Richard Cole. He will be greatly missed by grandchildren Leah and Christopher. Harry dedicated his life to serving his community in countless ways. This commitment to service was ultimately recognized in the naming of Stouffville's Harry Bowes Public School which opened in 2008. A World War II Veteran, Harry completed numerous bombing raids over Germany with the RCAF flying in a Lancaster bomber. After the war he earned a Pharmacy degree at the University of Toronto, where he met his wife and fellow pharmacist Marjorie Ellison. Together, they ran a successful drug store business, first in Toronto, then in Stouffville. While raising their two children, Harry continued his commitment to his community by serving on countless local boards and committees. His service included being elected for 22 years to the York Region School Board, where he served 6 terms as Chairman. He would later serve 6 years as Councilor for Ward 5 in Whitchurch Stouffville. Harry was also President of the Uxbridge Curling Club, President of Stouffville Minor Hockey, Treasurer of the Stouffville Legion, a founding member of the Markham Stouffville Hospital and a member of the Unionville and Thornhill curling clubs. In 1999, Harry was named Citizen of the Year for Whitchurch Stouffville. In addition to his public life, Harry loved to travel and visited most parts of the world including a trip to Moscow in 1972, where he saw the legendary Canada Russia series in person. Harry will be fondly remembered by the entire Stouffville community. Visitations Friday, August 6th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be held Saturday, August 7th at 11 a.m. at the East Ridge Missionary Church, 12485 10th Line, Stouffville, 905-640-3911. A light lunch will follow at the Stouffville Legion Branch 459, 12278 9th Line, Stouffville (at Main Street), 905-640-1714. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Harry Bowes Public School Memorial Fund.
