CHACKOWSKY, Helen - Sudden as lightning, leaving afterimages blurring our eyes, Helen "Hashka" Chackowsky (née Kowalewich) born November 3, 1928 in the old country, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013. She will be dearly missed by her sons (the three shnuroks): Peter (Pat), Leonard, and Nick; by her sweet grandchildren: Cameron, Taylor, Nicole, and Rylan; by her precious brothers and sisters: Sonia, Victor, Zoya, Leonard, and dear Eda with whom she lived in Etobicoke; by family and friends from East to West; by all her musical friends in Winnipeg and Toronto; by everyone she met and touched with her quiet charm and dignity (and cookies). Helen was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Eugene, and her brother Orest. Helen was an enthusiastic supporter of music, a love she passed on to her children. She directed and performed with choirs, orchestras, and dance ensembles with many associations including the AUUC, the FRC, the television series "Canadians All", the Trembita Dance Ensemble, the Winnipeg Mandolin Quintet, Folklorama, and lately, the Shevchenko Ensemble. A compassionate woman with a global vision, Helen travelled the world, especially in her entrepreneurial years working in the travel industry. Always a generous hostess, we'll remember many gatherings on Tweed Avenue and her wonderful recipes, preserves, cakes, pickles, baking, candy, and did we mention cookies? In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral, but a day of toasts, tributes, and sharing will be announced. In her memory, you may wish to decorate your home with some brightly coloured "kweetkas" (flowers) - one of her very favourite things.
