Helen ROSENTHAL Obituary

ROSENTHAL, Helen Stephanie (nee BLACK) Died peacefully on August 19, 2017 at the Toronto Grace Health Centre, of pancreatic cancer. Loving daughter of the late Ruth (Schwartz) Black and the late Joseph Black. Dear sister to Barbara D'Amaddio (John Foley) and Spencer Black (Pam Fornell). Dearly beloved mother of Alan (Ellen Mole), Jeffrey (Margaret Fulford) and Michael (Shayna Szymkowicz). Proud grandmother of Jeremy Trainor, Aaron Trainor and Julian Star Rosenthal. Helen was born and raised in New York City and studied at Flushing High School, Queens College and the University of Michigan. She taught mathematics to many thousands of students at the University of Toronto Scarborough and was a strong and active participant in the Faculty Association. Helen had a wonderful passion for life and loved to spend time with family and friends. She was an avid squash and tennis player for many years and embraced a very active and stimulating lifestyle. Upon retiring, Helen was overjoyed to delve deeper into the many activities that she enjoyed, including going to concerts, films and theatre productions, playing in weekly bridge games and immersing herself in the diverse cultural scenes of Toronto. Helen was known for her radiant smile and vivacious personality, both clear indicators of a satisfying and contented life, full of love and joy. She will be deeply missed by all those who loved her. The family would like to thank all of the medical staff who provided compassionate care to Helen and thoughtful support to her loved ones. An open drop-in memorial reception will be held on Sunday, September 10th. Drop in any time between 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. at 21 Dale Avenue in Toronto (you may check in at the concierge desk if you require directions to the apartment). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Helen's name, to an educational, social or health charity of your choice.

My work at UTFA introduced me to Helen; her clear focus, insights and sharp perspective were always greatly appreciated. She was a dedicated colleague to UTFA and the University of Toronto.

I met Helen at the numerous committees meetings of the University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA). She was very active in protecting the rights of all our members. She always was calm with a nice smile. We all will miss you Helen.

Helen-someone to laugh with, rejoice (and groan) over news with, share films and walks and skygazing with, a notable contributor to the board of our building after decades of remarkable contributions to so many other communities-a wonderful neighbour and friend.

I met Helen at a Scarborough Racquet Club where she was an active squash player. I have fond memories of Helen. We were last together at a gathering of a mutual friend, Toby Parsons and enjoyed many laughs. So sorry to hear of her passing: my deepest sympathy to her family.

Helen was a recent arrival at 21 Dale but she quickly became a valued friend to many of us. We will miss her pithy comments at Book Club. She leaves good memories to many.

I met Helen, close to 40 years ago, through her son Jeff.. She was kind and caring. Someone you wouldn't easily forget. May She Rest In Peace! I know she'll be missed by many, many people. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I met Helen many, many years ago at a jazz evening and we quickly became friends. What a lovely person - and although we had not seen each other for many years, we were still in touch via email. I will certainly miss her great humour and friendship. I will never forget my good friend.
