When I took the picture, Horst, Alastair, and I were about to start our first day at the World Masters in Sweden. I learned so much from Horst both on that trip and every time we were on the deck. We had a fabulous time in Gottenburg.

Horst was the epitome of a gentleman on and off the deck. He terrified some young officials, not because he was scary as a person, but because he expected everyone to show the same commitment to his beloved sport as he did. For Horst, good enough didnt make the grade. For anyone who cared to learn, Horst had infinite patience - a singular mentor.

We all miss him terribly

Horst was a dear swim friend. As Official chair for MSSAC, I could always count on his help at our hosted meets. He was a kind and gracious man who truly loved the sport of competitive swimming. My condolences to the family.

We were all saddened to hear the news Horst passed away, its still a shock to this day.
I first met Horst at the Oakville YMCA, we are members of the Parkinsens Group. We had many chats and I got to know him over the past 3 years, he was a very interesting man.
I know he had a great passion for his officiating years with the swim teams, he shared stories of his travels to the meets, people he worked with and different events.
His other pride he spoke often about was his wife Mrs Tietze, their 2 daughters, their careers and of coarse their families. he loved and was so very proud of them all.
Horst is greatly missed by our group at the Y, we speak of him often.
RIP Horst.

Horst was a great friend - to me and to swimming. Though I had spent time with him for many years, I really got to know him when the "Three Amigos", Horst, Alastair Currie, and I got the chance to go to Masters Worlds in Gothenburg in 2010.

He was gracious, wise in the ways of officiating and life, and a mentor beyond price.

He had high standards and expected serious attention and commitment to the job of officiating. A whole generation of officials and the sport itself are better for his presence.

We will all miss him.

I worked with Horst for several years at OPG. He always had stories to share about the swim meets he attended. We missed him when he retired; I'm glad to hear that he made it to Hawaii for his last hurrah - he always spoke so fondly of visiting there. My thoughts and prayers are with his family; although we never met I truly share in your loss.
