James Kreppner Obituary

KREPPNER, James Rudolf - March 6, 1962 to May 14, 2009 The world has lost an extraordinary human being. It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of James, a man possessed of a brilliant mind, gentle soul and tender heart, after a long, courageous and feisty battle with illness, on May 14, 2009, in his 47th year due to HIV and Hepatitis C-related complications. Dearly beloved, best friend since high school, and husband of Antonia ('Smudge') Swann, James is predeceased by parents Rudolf and Marie (nee Karl), second mother Gerda (Gitt), and oldest brother Walter. Adored by his remaining siblings, sister Hilda (Al), and brothers John (Jill), Joe (Marlene) and Bill (Ardith), and by his mother-in-law Ann Swann and his brother-in-law, and surrogate younger brother, Peter Swann. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and his many cousins, in particular, Judy (Weissmann) Kretz and husband Werner for whom he held a special place in his heart. He will also be missed by his many friends and colleagues in the ongoing fight for safe blood for all Canadians and justice for all those with HIV and Hepatitis C. James was a highly respected, articulate and exemplary activist who represented the true meaning of fairness and kindness. A member of the board of directors of the Canadian Blood Services, co-founder of the Canadian Treatment Action Council and one of the founders of the Toronto People with AIDS Foundation, as well as numerous other boards and committees including the Canadian Hemophilia Society and the HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic (Ontario), each of which benefited from his legal expertise, drive and compassion for others. James was the recipient of many honours and awards for his tireless efforts during his too short life, including the Queen's Jubilee Medal awarded by the Governor General of Canada, the City of Toronto Gardiner Award for Citizen of the Year, the Canadian Association for HIV Research (CAHR) Special Award for his role in encouraging research in the field of Hepatitis C-HIV Co-Infection, the Canadian Association for HIV Research "Red Ribbon" Award for his work in AIDS advocacy and he was one of the first names put on the Ontario AIDS Network Honour Roll celebrating outstanding achievement in HIV/AIDS advocacy, but he always considered his ultimate reward the continuing ability to be able to do something that helped others. He also played one of the leading roles in initiating the Commission of Inquiry on the Blood System in Canada and James was one of the lead plaintiffs in the class action suit that was launched to secure Hepatitis C compensation, which resulted in a $1.1 billion settlement for Canadians infected through tainted blood. An immediate private family service is planned. In future, there will be an announcement of a larger public memorial and celebration of James's life and work. To the Kreppner and Swann family,
It was with great sadness that I read about the passing of James. I felt priviledged to have known him for his contribution to our board of directors at Harbour Square and on the Health Club Committee. I admired his composure, sense of fairness, and dedication.
Antonia, this might be only a small consolation in your tragic loss, but be assured that James' legacy will never be forgotten.

To the Kreppner/Swann family,

On behalf of CANAC (Canadian Association of Nurses in AIDS Care), and the Board, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies for the loss of a very special person. James commitment and persistence to the issues around AIDS and Hep C served as an example and inspiration to so many. It is because of people like him that HIV treatment moved at such a rapid rate nationally, over all these years, making life immeasureably better for so many. His legacy will hopefully live on and inspire many more of us to continue the fight.

On a personal note, I met James probably closer to 20 years ago, when I was involved in HIV care at Sick Kids. I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time, but may James passion and accomplishments serve to temper the grief.

Kind regards,
Cheryl Arneson

Dear Susan,

Yes the fight continues. It is my hope that co-infected people will be able to get organ transplants in our country before another person dies unnecessarily.

Kind regards,

Smudge,

I am deeply saddened to hear about James. Although I have not kept in contact with James over the years he will always remain in my heart as one of my dearest friends.

The times spent with James in those first years of adulthood always seem to come to the surface when sharing stories and memories with other people. He helped shape the person I am today.

My condolences to the Swann and Kreppner families.

Antonia my sincere sympathy to you ..........I remember, with appreciation, the many years that James served on our Board. I always admired his political achievements in the face of his own personal suffering. My heart goes out to you.

I was James' articling principal at the federal Department of Justice in Toronto in the late 1980's. I remember a gentle and brave man who made a difference despite his suffering.

To the Kreppner and Swann families: My sympathies to you at this time of your great loss. I remember James from high school at Williams years ago when we both volunteered in the library. Although this was over thirty years in the past I never forgot that he befriended me, a kid who was kind of an outcast.

Thank you James, and God bless.

To the Kreppner and Swann families; My deepest sympathy to all for your loss. I was deeply sadenned to read of the death of James. I knew him many years ago while attending school in Aurora, and sitting with him watching the softball games while he kept "watch" over his brother Bill.
I feel it to be an honour to have known and befriended him. His presence will be missed tremendously.

I've just read the wonderful tributes to James, and although I didn't know him very well, I would like to add that what impressed me especially was his humility and self-effacement whenever he was complimented on his achievements. My deepest sympathy to you, Antonia, on the loss of your partner, and may I add how much I admire your own impressive achievements and personal qualities.

Many of you knew James as an adult who influenced the laws and liabilities related to tainted blood making your lives safer. The James I knew was a teenager sitting in the kitchen with my brother,Steve playing chess (always humming), swimming and laughing in the pool, sharing a family meal and, above all, never letting his disease get him down. The boys were always planning their futures and along with Steve and Mike, they made their dreams come true. From the time he was 14, James was destined to become a lawyer. He was always a deep thinker and wise beyond his years! Antonia, you have been a remarkable partner and I admire the courage and committment you made to James. You were certainly always a part of that 'dream'. Canada has truly lost a great soul.

To the Kreppner and Swann families: It was with sadness that I read of James' passing and I send my sincere condolences. I was honoured to know James if for only a short time several years ago. He certainly was an amazing and dedicated man. His determination has changed life for many. He will be sorely missed.
Many times I have thought of the Swann family even though we have lost touch over the years. God bless. Susan Spytz (Wellington, Ontario)

Dear Smudge, the Kreppner Family, the Swann Family and James' many close friends,

It is still hard to believe that the physical presence of James is no longer in the world. I was honoured to be friends with him for a time. The very thought of him makes me smile and I continue to be in awe at his wisdom and strength and his willingness to embrace life in the face of the hand life dealt him. On top of that, to spend his precious energy righting the wrongs that affected him and so many others and fighting to make our blood supply and health system better for all of us are also a testimony to just the kind of person James Kreppner was.

My heart goes out to all of you. Please know that I, and many others, are walking alongside you in your pain and grieving. I will never forget James and I know his spirit is and will continue to shine strong in this world.

May you be comforted by your memories.

peace

It was just in the last couple of days that I was thinking of James. How He and John Platter had held the Blood System accountable. It is thorough James's hard work and dedication that hemphiliacs in Canada have been able to have an extension on their lives. We will truely miss James. Our sympathy and condolescences to James's family and to Smudge.

My heart goes out for everyone who's life James touched and to his family and friends" The honour of knowing this amazing young man, what he stood and fought for, you were all apart of his incredible journey, it's not over. It's just begun."

James Kreppner was a tireless advocate who did so many wonderful things to keep the movement alive and necessary. I will never forget watching the CNN/Time magazine documentary in which he was the centre of the story about tracking down tainted blood and holding those responsible. James, Godspeed. As I have said many times, thank you for caring. Thank you for your work. - Rick L., HALCO
