JAN HENDRIKS Passed away peacefully, with family by his side on Friday, May 3, 2013 at the age of 82. Dearly loved husband of the late Nell Hendriks (2011). Much loved father of Ingrid and her husband John Janssen of Hampton and Sandra Biggs and her husband Doug of Whitby. Loved Opa of Peter, Monika and Erik and Rachel and her husband Darryl, Amanda and her wife Melissa. Great-Opa of Jack and Carter. Survived by his sister Nel and his brother Joop both of the Netherlands. Jan left a war-ravaged Netherlands in 1953 to immigrate to Canada with his young wife and baby daughter. He spoke little English but soon adapted to his new country finding work as a machinist. In 1955, he was hired by IBM Canada working there for 33 years before retiring in 1988. He always loved The Beautiful Game of soccer. As a player in the IBM men's league and as a coach and referee with the Whitby Minor Soccer Association of which he was a founder. He was a steadfast supporter of Feyenoordof the Dutch premier league to the end. Jan and Nell loved their Dutch heritage and volunteered in several capacities with the Dutch-Canadian club of Durham Region. As the club president, Jan helped to organize the Dutch floats and pavilions in the annual Fiesta celebration. But perhaps his greatest pride was for the young Dutch folk dancers that he and Nell coached and who performed at many events around Durham. The family gratefully acknowledges the wonderful care that Jan received from everyone at the Village of Taunton Mills in Whitby. A celebration visitation will be held at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home, 5295 Thickson Rd. N., Whitby on Sunday, May 5th from 2 until 4 p.m. In memory Jan, memorial donations to the Alzheimers Society of Durham Region would be appreciated.
